100 Gallon for RES

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well with 100g you have a litterally endless list, almost.

If i were you, i would personally get an oscar, a JD, convicts, Firemouthes, keyholes, plecos, synos, large school of tiger barbs, large school of giant danios. OR a tank full of large schooling fish like red tail tinfoil barbs, bala sharks, giant danios, rocket gars, congo tetras and as a centerpiece maybe a severum orsomething.

If i had like a 300g tank or something i would get like a midas, red terror, oscar, JD, chocolate cichlid and so on. lots of attitude

OK so I have had the tank a week and he LOVES it!!! Turns out that it is only 75 gallons but it is still much better than the 10!! Wanted to know if anyone thinks I will have to upgrade again or if this size tank is sufficient for a single male RES?

It's probably going to depend on the sex. If he turns out to be a male the 75 should probably be OK for life. Females get bigger so you might find you want something bigger in a couple of years. As I recall my YBS was sexable when he got to around 3-4" so you should be able to tell pretty quickly.

I agree if it is for sure a male would be fine in a 75 for life if its a female it will need a bigger tnak most likely in a few years but not to soon , it would be kool if there was sometype of fish you could put in there with it ... not really meaning something exotic .. say some natives like sunfish or largemouth bass .. catfish stuff like that keep us posted and get some pics pls :D

He's definitely a male!! He has exposed himself to me!! It freaked me the hell out till I found out what it was!! Also has the longer claws and longer fatter tail. I'm really hoping that the 75 gallon will be his "forever home" But I'm prepared to upgrade if I have to!

LOL I bet that did freak you out when he did that wish someone had a camera and took a pic of your face when that happened LOL that would have been priceless, have you thought about getting any fish for the tank too ?

I have guppies and rosy red minnows in there with him now and the only ones he even tries to eat are the minnows, which he has picked off a few of. I would like to add some more fish but nothing too expensive as they are all fair game for food...any suggestions? I will post some pics of his setup in a lil bit.

Zebra danios and White Cloud Mt minnows are nice and he will rarely catch one (unless you get long finned) plus they breed in the tank and inexpensive.

In theory White clouds are cool water fish but I find at 75 degrees they breed non stop .

Yes, white clouds are nice and quick, they should work fine.

Wow I'd thought he was still a baby, OK then definitely male and I think you'll be fine with the 75 for life.

I agree with CTU and Louie. You will be fine with your current set up given that your RES is a male. I have both male and female and the only luck that I havent had much luck with fish in my tank. My RES are lightning fast and usually double team any fish that I put in there. If you want to put fish in with him, just make sure they are quick or they will be lunch. As for your setup, the net is ripe with suggestions. THere are tons of DIY projects out there for your RES setup. Tons of inexpensive but cool designs for basking areas, docks, etc. Have fun.
