Hi peeps, i am new to the MFK community but not new to the hobby.
I must say job well done to some of the seniors on these forums... You guys are really knowledgeable on
fish keeping and have saved me a lot of time!!

But lets get to the point!!

i have a 4.5inch male jag and he is currently housed in a 75 gallon with just a common pleco.. I just bought a 125 gallon(2m long) tank.
The tank is being cycled at the moment.
I would like to add more cichlids to the tank and i figured when moving him to a new environment that would be my best chance!

any advice would be appreciated :):)

Depending on what you put in there, it would probably be best to put the other fish in first an then the jag so that the jag doesn't set up the whole tank as his territory right off the bat. But I'm not one to tell you which fish or how many.

Honestly you picked the wrong fish for that kind of setup. That is way too little space for a male jag to be thrown with tankmates. A male jag is a volatile fish that's gets big real quick & claims a big territory. You'll be ok for a little while, but once his attitude fully turns on he will kill anything that he his able to. Your looking at a 17in +/- an inch fish, with nasty teeth, and is designed to eat other fish by nature (piscivore). Don't worry though a full grown male jag is a heck of a solo pet in a 125. Think of it as a slightly detuned dovii.

I thought that would be the case!
And i see what you mean.. There will be big problems down the road
125 enough for full size?

If he is all by himself he is going to need some entertainment :)
I feed him guppy fry.. once a month and that really seems to entertain him;)
But could i do anything else?

This is part of the reason I decided to go with a community setup...I love cichlids (and have a few), but I like to see fish interact. A Jag's idea of "interacting" with other fish typically doesn't end well for the other fish. I'm not a big fan of the "Overstock to diminish aggression" strategy either, so I think unless the tank is large enough for him to establish his territory and for other fish to steer clear of it, it's best kept as a species tank.

Jags get pretty big and are really territorial. If you want to have a cichlid community you should probably try some smaller species like convicts and firemouths

Never worked for me in that size tank. I would have loved to keep a Midas and Jag together.

Some smaller cichlids can work. Then the jag won't see them as competition. But not too small or he'll see them as food.

But 125 is a nice size to just keep him solo.

Ï'd rather have one Maserati then 10 Toyota's.

If it is going to be your only tank do something that will be really entertaining. Maybe go for a male green terror, a pair of salvini, a couple convicts, some silver dollars and some tiger barbs. Oscars are also usually pretty good as far as not being hyper aggressive. They will outgrow most of their tank mates and can act as peace keepers. Goodluck!
