Can anyone give me some advise on how to make my water clearer. the filter was cleaned 3 days ago and my tank is still very cloudy, and i did about a 10 gallon water change last week about this time.

Need more info.

How old is the tank?

What is it stocked with?

What kind of filter are you using?

What kind of lighting are you using? How long are they on per day?

Is the cloudy water white or greenish?

Describe your setup in detail.

the tank is about 6 weekes old.
the filter is a rena filstar xp3 canister.
it is filled with
3 red tail 44s
2 yellow labs
1 red zebra
2 lithobates
3 acie
2 red tops
2 Auratus
and 4 others
19 total fish
the tank has plants, rock and sand in it

That's a lot of fish for a young tank...its just cycling so keep and eye on your ammonia and nitrites in the next month or so. Go light on the food too.

What's probably happening is that you are getting a "bacteria bloom" which causes the water to be cloudy, once your bio filter establishes itself, it should clear up.

Also...I would look into possibly getting another filter. I don't have any experience with the XP3, but I have a EHEIM 2217 on a 75 gallon, which I later added a AC110 to as well. I don't think the canister alone was supplying enough bio filtration for it. For your 100 gallon, I think you may run into the same issue.

I am using 2 20 watt power glo lights that are on for about 12 hours a day.
the water is a white cloudiness.
the filter intake is on the right and the return is on the left. the return has a jet fitting on it that is pointed at a slight degree to the surface.
their are 23 small plants mostly Argentina and amazon swords. their is probably about 100 pounds of rock in the aquarium along with 100 pounds of sand.

With that many fish in there I think it could be a while before the colony of beneficial bacteria will stabilize...magic 8 ball says you've probably got another 4-6 weeks of cloudiness with that many fish in there producing that much waste...

i set up my 150 with cycled filters and it stayed cloudy for 1.5 months. the next day it was crystal clear

Hi Everybody,

I think there's not much to say about why your water is cloudy! It is for sure a bacterial bloom due to excess fish in a new tank.

For my experience I would advise a partial water change of around 30% of your tank twice a week at least, for about the next 3 to 4 weeks and the water will clear it self out as soon as your bio filter establish.

If your are looking for a faster solution I would advise on a UV lamp, that is always a good addition for every tank, on a permanent basis. Don't forget that this solution may delay a bit your bio filter setup, as it will kill your bacteria. So, I would wait around 3 to 4 weeks befores adding the UV.

Goodbye from Portugal,
