100% getting tanks! Final stock list?

I would keep a close eye on the red humps when you get them.Males can be extremely aggressive towards females once they reach maturity. They often kill females and can become a real pain. There are lots of other geos that are less problematic.

Went to my LFS and didn't see any altis. Also really do like the red humps. Any recommendations on other combinations that would work? As opposed to 1 male 3 female. Like I said, originally I said that because I thought males were pretty aggressive toward each other.

You are right in that males are hard on each other and keeping 1male with multiple females is the right way to go.Serious breeders of this species are well aware of the mature males wife beating tendencies and have multiple tanks on standby to rescue beaten up females.
Males tend to be very laid back and easy going up until the point they decide to breed and then all he'll breaks out.
Have you considered a group of red head tapajos. They are lovely fish and should work in your set up.

I like them but don't they prefer softer water? Also here they seem to cost a lot, which is fine if they would do well.

I have known people keep and breed them in hard water but they would have been tank bred fish.Ideally they would prefer softer water and WC fish would not do so good.
Have you looked at gymno species?some of them come from harder water as do some of the acara species.
Have you considered a c/a tank? If you like geos, thorichthys are a close alternative.
They are simular to geophagus in many ways.
They do well in groups they are also substrate sifting in their feeding habits and reach the 6 to 7 inch mark and thrive in hard water.
You could keep a nice size group of these and they don't normally cost to much.
