Thinking about going 100% submerged media in my wet/dry.

Anybody else do this here? Pros? Cons? Thoughts?

:feedback:

ill never do trickle again :D

This is a fairly common setup here, it works well if you use enough of the right sort of media, plenty of Matrix / Siporax and japanese mat.

I keep several large bags of submerged media in the last chamber of my wet/dry. In the event my pumps stop running this media will stay wet. I also have battery powered air pumps powering airstones placed underneath the bags of media to keep the water from being stagnant.

bump

i have a few setups like this
seems to work fine
i like submerged cus when power goes out or doing a wc i dont have to worry about killing the bb
and i think with submerged you grow more bb
why?
cus the dry part on a wd the media isnt 100% getting wet like submerged
least thats my guess :grinno:
thats about all i have for ya lol

Wet/dry works because of the availability of atmospheric O2. The easy access of O2 makes nitrification MUCH more efficient than when it has to steal the O2 from the water (as in any basic submerged application). Depending on your particular circumstance, submerged applications may force you to aerate the water separately (such as for riverine fish with high O2 requirements) whereas it is almost never necessary to do so with wet/dry applications.

There's no inherent drawback to submerged applications, but it CAN be more difficult to create the same nitrifying potential in the same amount of space.

With all submerged media, you basically end up with a very large canister filter in operating theory. You also lose the other benefits of wet/dry (degassing, heavy oxygenation, etc.). Some people choose to do a little of both methods at the same time.

almost all of my media (pot scrubbies, air filter media.. its sorta like the pillow stuffing stuff) is submerged.. only stuff that sticks out only does so because i keep the water level low in the sump to prevent floods in a power outage...
