100% Submerged Media

Why not have the best of both worlds? I keep bio balls in the overflow boxes then through the bio ball chamber (all this is wet dry) then cram as much ceramic in the submerged part of the sump.

The myth floating around here that you need wet/dry style is the fact that people are cheap and usually use a bio media with a very low surface area (and no, pot scrubbies do not have a large surface area). If you use sintered glass, or some other high area media you will not only get better filtration, you will use less. All this with a "inefficient" nitrification medium.

It seems you aren't really aware of how wet/dry filters work as compared to submerged filters.

I agree that scrubbies don't have a large surface area compared to sintered glass, etc, but surface area isn't the key performance factor in wet/dry filtration. Scrubbies and bioballs will outperform sintered glass in a wet/dry while the reverse is true in submerged applications.

I keep about 90% submerged (after I do a WC) by the end of the week due to evaporation I've got about 60% submerged.. It seems to work fine for me.

Got the 100 cleaned out. Waiting on the lexan for baffles. There's a koi supplier in town that sells japanese mat and bacteria house. My plan is to have 3 seperate sections with offset baffles to keep water flowing. Bio balls to keep media suspended. First chamber will have the jmat with water from overflow passing through filter floss first. 2nd chamber will be filled with BH, 3rd will be bags of ceramic rings.

I've also been reading up on planting with soil. So I will have either one or two plant species in the actual tank. It's going to be low tech as natural as possible for the plants. Some sources I've been looking into for plants:
