We are going to get a 1000 gal pond or a 1250 gal pond for our group of channel cats. With this size of a pond, I was thinking about adding more of a stock then 8 channel cats. I was thinking a RTC but was wondering if I could also keep a Tiger shovelnose as well. If the stock was kept at an RTC, a Tiger shovelnose, and my group of 8 channels would it be over stocked? Also was planning to filter this thing with canisters, but was wondering how people normally oxygenate and heat these ponds?

Yes it will be overstocked...
No canister made is big enough.... you will need to make a box or drum filter.
I heat my ponds with Electro inline heaters or I use a couple of 1500w titanium heaters... however if your pond is outside...forget it unless you’re in Florida

I figured it would overstocked. Would it be possible or should I drop the shovelnose? Yeah, meant to mention I was thinking of building a drum filter. I am in NC so I won't need to heat it in the summer, but will need to in the winter. It will be in my garage.

It’s the RTC ... 1000g isn’t really going to cope without massive WC’s several times a week.
I’d just stick with the channels... a RTC will probably eat them anyhow;)

Really, I would have thought that the 1000 gals would be able to cope with the RTC. Are there any large catfish we could add? Probably going to stick with the channels but wondering if there are any.

Would a 1500 be able to handle the bioload? Just wondering because I would like to have an RTC, or is 2000 the minimum that would be able to handle both the channels and the RTC.

If you can do it go 2000 gal, I would make your own filter, just run a pond pump thru a trashcan, add a couple pillowcases of lava rock, the drop from the water leaving the trash can and hitting the ponds surface adds oxygen.

And yes assuming they are similar size redtail cats and channels can get along
