1000 gallon indoor pond!!FILTERATAION?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very exciting! I dont have advice either, but I would also love to see pics up! What is going to be housed in this HUGE pond

I'd go with a big magnum pump and a cylindrical garbage can. Drill holes in the top, layer floss, bio, and chem, have the output in the bottom, use hose to direct flow.

Ok so I am currently building a 1000 gallon pond demensions are 120X80X28 and I will be using 2000 watts of heaters to heat it and was wondering what I should use for filteration my plan was using 4 FX5s and a Cascade1500 all combined flows about 3000gph is this enough or should I add a 55 gallon sump also? WIth a 1000 gph return pump? :nilly::screwy:

And my stock will be a RTC, RTCXTSN, MArblePIM, albino channel cat, 3 claris cats, TSN, Lima, Silver arow, 3 florida gars and possibly some of my rays,

Go with your idea, but dump 2 FX5's into a bio-tower ( http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66676&highlight=bio+tower ) and 2 FX5's into a 55g sump with whatever bio-media you can afford (from lava rock on up). Gravity return both systems to the pond.

Leave the Cascade 1500 to run by itself. Basically as a backup.

Is the temp. variance of the room that great that you need 3Kw of heaters? Just curious.

Dr Joe

Thanks dc. joe great advice and john has a great idea I will do this! I just dont know how good it will look but ill figure it out! I guess i dont need to hide the sump or tower if i wasnt hiding the fx5's thanks again

really I know for a fact that larger reef aqauria use them as well as many ponds tha tdo as well the bio load cant be beat for any wet dry such as this 20 k reef that was built using sand filters ...go behind any pet smart they use sand filters ...dont know where you get your info from http://www.atlantismarineworld.com/articles/08-AdvancedAquarists-FeaturedAMW.pdf

?????????

sand filters yes, normal pool filter no. normal pool filter is what people buy when they get above ground steel framed pools. there junk. if you go and buy a pool filter for a 10k gallon in ground concrete pool sure it is going to work excellant. but the pool filters they sell for 1k gallon pools are junk. compare the cost of a sump and a few fx5's to the cost of a filter for an in ground 10k pool. of course it better work good for that kind of money. i filter 1200 gallons and have 42 fish in my pond and im using a 35 gallon rubbermaid container i bought at wal-mart for $30, a custom pvc spray bar set up, my own trick up my sleeve filter media (i actually have about 20 lbs of sand in my filter held suspended) and i have 0 ammonia 0 nitrites and my nitrates are kept under 20 ppm. total cost of filtration $300

so more info on sand this is what my set up is on a 2hp

I agree that a pool type filter using sand is the best filtration method if you've got the $$ (including the electric bill!:WHOA:), the space, and you can either tolerate the noise or have a place to put it so you don't have to listen to it (the pump) running. A friend of mine has one on his Koi pond and it keeps the water sparkling clean with just a monthly backwash.

also i wouldnt put the rays with the cats. its a lose lose situation. the rtc just might decide to have a tortilla for lunch.

well my rays will be far to big for the rtc to gobble on and i see it all the time my cats are very dosile I ccan put a 4 inch jag with a 14 inch rtc but thanks for the advice and what kind of pump are you using i can get a 1200 gph for $30 new
