1000g acrylic rebuild...putting humpy back together?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It could be possible to use the acrylic from this tank to build a giant cinder block or concrete tank in that you could use this for two or four viewing windows and then have a 5000 gallon concrete tank with plenty of good viewing windows in it. If I had access to a large volume of acrylic sheets and a house with a little land or room I would be temped with this idea.

the wife and I are discussing this option as well, lol. But we aren't at our "forever house" at the moment. I still may just pick up the sheets and hold on to them until I am ready.

I would love to have one!

That sounds like a good idea. Right now I'm trying to find the right house that would make a good candidate for a giant cement fish tank. Such as when I buy the house it has to accommodate my dream of owning a large 5000 gallon plus fish tank. The house also right out of the gate also has to be able to be able to hold a 300 to 600 gallon acrylic fish tank in it. Or it has to be easly modfited to hold up a 500 gallon plus tank.

Such as the house needs to have a minimum of a acre of open space on it to have room to put in a metal building that will house the giant fish tank and train set in it. Also the house I'm even looking at the possibly of buying a house with a ruin down swimming pool on the property which could possibly be used for the fish tank by knocking down a section of it and rebuilding it with large viewing windows that look into a living room built into the base of the metal building. The metal building would be built over top of the swimming pool to make it indoors. I would try this on a ruin down swimming pool that needs to be rebuilt but if the swimming pool is turn key ready and in good shape I would operate it as a regular swimming pool. As for the idea of buying a house with the intention of putting in a large fish tank it's not out of the question considering that when you have to build one of the those metal beam garages that you to pore a concrete along the whole bottom of the building to support it. Which allows you during the poring of the foundation to add wooden forms for a giant fish tank with openings for large viewing windows.

As for why I'm planning this right off the bat for my new home is I have to plan that I might get stuck in it for ten or 20 years.

Check the material for warping and crazing. 40 will bond it back together fine providing you clean up the edges to be bonded with a router making light passes. Trying to bond a rough edge without annealing first will result in crazing as the material relaxes over time.

Hey Knobhill, hope the new year is treating you and Mufasa well!

This sounds like an awesome project. My main concern would be the weight of the panels. According to this site (http://www.usplastic.com/knowledgebase/article.aspx?contentkey=884) an 8x4" sheet of acrylic @ 1.5" thick will weigh around 275lbs. As you start putting it together, that weight is going to really start adding up. I would imagine you would need a forklift or some heavy duty material handling equipment to be able to put it together.
