which would be best for jewel rio 400 tank ? (100g)
fx5, tetratech ex2400, aquael unimax 700, rena xp4 ?

From what I know, the FX5 is a great filter, so can't go wrong with it.

I personally think sumps with larger tanks. A lot more room for media and if you do it right as a DIY project, it is a lot cheaper than a big canister. IMO.

Definitely the Fluval FX5.

A canister filter is better for mechanical filtration since it will force the water through the media rather than ask it to go through the media the way any open filter will.

If you did a sump then I would have an inline canister after the pump on the way back up to the tank.

My first choice for a tank that size would be a 30 Gallon sump.

If you don't want a sump, go with the FX5 or XP4. You can't go wrong with either one.

By "asking" you mean gravity forcing it down through the media? :D

No, gravity pulls it down, but if there is too much resistance (some debris) it could simply end up flowing over/around the media not through it.

what media would you use in the fx5, just the supplied sponges ?

That and a ton of BioMax. As stated by others I would also use a sump. I bought a FX5 for my 180 and am in the process of setting up a sump. The FX5 is used for bio and mechanical for now to get the tank started, and once the sump is set up I will switch the FX5 over to all mechanical and the sump will be all bio.
