Definitely the Fluval FX5.

A canister filter is better for mechanical filtration since it will force the water through the media rather than ask it to go through the media the way any open filter will.

If you did a sump then I would have an inline canister after the pump on the way back up to the tank.
One other thing in the mix: FX5's SAY they use 50 watts. Xp's and 'Fluvals have a differnent wattage on their motors than is printed/posted on their operations paperwork/boxes. So if wattage is a big thing, the sump is first, followed by the canister inline but most guys I know put it BEFORE the sump.
Don't know and will keep an open mind uptil I start sumping myself, shortly.

If you are going to do an inline canister do an Ocean Clear, ideally the one with backflow option, the 354. The backflow option is amazing, I didn't use this exact one at the shop I was managing, but the backflow filters made all the difference in the world.

I have Biomax in my FX5 but if I was doing it again I would use the Seachem Matrix.

have fx5 runing 4 days now, what a good filter !
i did a 70% water change when setting up , moved the decor and the tank was very cloudy.
when i switched on the filter it only took 20 mins to clear, very clear !
i'd buy another.
