Just as a note, since your a freshwater guy, you could do a really sick aquascape in it... i've seen some really impressive Amano style cube tanks and all i can say is WOW!

I recently purchased his completed works book. STUNNING. Seeing his style progress over the years (the book is in rough chronological order of all the tanks he's done) really brings it together. He seemed to have a whole phase of cube tanks a few years back.
Even if you don't even want to do a heavily planted tank (or even any plants at all!) you can still use design element of driftwood and rock from his tanks for an aquascape. Every tank I've done lately I've drawn inspiration from a favorite tank or two of his. My 33 gallon especialy has been a long process, but I'm really enjoying it. Brings a whole new element to the hobby, learning about aquascaping and use of space--it's just as challenging, and in some cases more so, as many forms of art...
That's really what Amano tanks are: functioning pieces of art.
^ Exactly... thats why i'm now slowly getting into the designing and setting up of tanks which "flow" if you will... but definitely agree you don't need plants to do an Amano tank, just rocks and driftwood as you said will go a long way if done properly...
