Nitrate is the end result of the nitrogen cycle and is removed with water changes. Although, it is possible for your tap water to have nitrates in it.

yippy yahooo, that 's great. Thank you aclokworkorange. I did a 25% water change and removed gravel (some ppl said, not good for discus beginer) yesterday and tested again today. There is a little ammonia, zero nitrite, 10 nitrate. is that normal to have a little ammonia?
