LFSs will usually give you 25% - 30% of what they'd sell them for. So the bigger you let them get, the better. If they're 1/2" or so they can only sell them for a buck or 2. You could also take them to your local aquarium societies auction.
I raise artemia in the back yard to feed fry, it's easy and low maintenance. 10lbs of rock salt in a kiddy pool, water and teaspoon of brine shrimp eggs per week, and in a couple days you've got tons of fry food for the entire summer.

Try getting them as close to an inch as you can. Water changes, large grow out tank and multiple small feedings of varied diet and frozen foods will get you there in a few months.

Those are going to be stunning... to bad im so far away. As for price I agree with what most people are saying $1 per inch or close to that
I catch them out of the canals and use them for feeders all the time, after I keep them in quarantine for a little while. They breed like crazy!
