I have a 10 gallon fish tank I am currently using for a peacock fry. I have a Whisper 20 on it, since I have set it up I see the stuff floating on the surface it gets since I dont have any aeration in the tank. So I was thinking I would just get an air pump for it, but then I am wondering if for not much money could I get a better filter that would do both? The way the HOB hangs on the back it doesnt aerate because the run out is below the water line.

I have heard of sponge filters, would this be something I could look into? Or would I be better off to just get a 10g air pump? I dont want something with a ton of bubbles, just something to help break the surface and get the gas exchange working right.

Sponge filters are great, especially for fry. Just put it in the tank & run it with the HOB still running for a month to get it started.

Or you could just lower the water level till water cascades out of the HOB and breaks the surface tension. :D

I only see Hydro Sponge 1, 2, 4 and 5? Is there really a difference for each one or is it just the sponge size?

Powerhead+sponge filter+10g+fry=not my favorite combo :(
=no fry:confused:

I use a (mature) sponge and a box on my fry tanks. Air driven.

A mature sponge for bio (and food for the fry) and a box with fluff for mechanical.

And I do weekly or more frequent water changes.

So what would you suggest I go to? Just a sponge filter? If so what size? Do I need an air pump to go with it?

Yes, you can power it also with an air pump.
However, I do not understand the objection to a small powerhead sucking water thru the sponge as shown below

From left to right: I, II, III, IV, V

Increased sponge size = increased surface for beneficial bacteria = increased capacity for bioload
