Yes, you can power it also with an air pump.
However, I do not understand the objection to a small powerhead sucking water thru the sponge as shown below

I dont either. I thought the sponge was there so the fry would not get sucked in.

Correct, but some fry can't take the current that the powerheads put out.

Powerheads do make a sponge filters more productive. You can switch to a powerhead once the fry can take the current.

On second thought, my 2-week-old molly fry is doing just fine with that exact set-up ...
