10g SW tank

I recommend an oversized filter, esp if you are doing HOB. I would just go with standard media. No reason to waste LR going into your filter, just make sure that it stays clean. You might want to consider running purigen in your HOB.

I wouldnt use freshwater sand unless it is aragonite.

Powerhead might be good, but check your flow first, no reason to spend money if you dont need to. Vortechs are cool, but based on the sounds of things you arent really trying to buy the ritz with this project.

Definitely tryin to do it on the cheap. I got a filter rated for a 20G tank and figure Ill put it at one end to get the current to go across the tank.
Your sayin to just use normal sponge or the purigen stuff

So I cant use the sand out of my 55, its play sand?

No...play sand is no good.

I am a big fan of lots of flow, but I mainly have corals in my tank. My big pred tank does not have enough flow...we are not going to talk about it.

I would recommend that you have some filter floss you can chuck when it gets gross as mechanical filtration, or that you put a sponge on the intake and just clean it in fresh saltwater when you do your h2o changes. This will allow you to get some area for beneficial bacteria to grow, and keeps debris out of your filter. Then I would use purigen in the little bag in the filter itself.

sounds like a plan. Im taking my time getting everything so i dont screw up and try to rush it lol. And so when people make suggestions i can change plans some and not have to redo the tank.
