I bought one from a LFS where I live for around the same price. But I didn't have high expectations too. Turned out to be an old school zz. Still pretty...even grew a nice kok. I always thought I had a male until I visited the LFS a few months after I turned him him. They told me "HE" laid eggs a few times.....

You should know around 4" but with real quality you can tell even smaller than that.

There are those occasions they don't show their full potential till they hit 7-8"s. I've seen them go either way honestly. I had one that as a baby didn't look like much and it turned out nice for what it was. While I've seen some that should have been stunners turn into duds.

Well umm i do have a few buddies still have flowerhorn frys left. LMK if your interested for some nice quality flowerhorns. Good luck with any flowerhorns catches your interest. Don't mean to burst your bubble, but pretty much ANY fish at 1.5" will be nearly impossible to determine how they will look when bigger and the sex. Convict's maybe (I'm sure there are others too), but Flowerhorns are tricky. They tend to change some as they grow. Genetics play a HUGE role in these fish and how they look. Some get very pearly while some only have a little bit of pearls. Some get bigger kok's then others, there are a lot of foods and tricks to enhance these things, but bottom line, if it isn't in their genetic make up... it's just going to be an average or below average fish. Not to mention their aggression is right up there with Red Devils and Midas. They rarely ever tolerate anything in a tank with them.

You can take a GUESS if they're going to be great or not at 1.5 inches, but the only sure way to tell is when they're 2-3 inches+.

really ? you can sex them at 1.5 ? thats cool ... so you tout yourself as a breeder ... thats cool i didn't know we had real flowerhorn breeders in cali .

uhh... how can you not tell when their 1.5 in? I can only tell from Flowerhorn... none other cichlids... umm i don't really mind of you saying that i am guessing but it's okay. If you don't like what i am saying then its fine. You know what you know and I know what i know.

Flowerhorn is going to eat both of the red devils and midas in one tank. 99% sure. Red devils and Midas is not that bad because you can always put them into any community tank but not flowerhorns.

You don't come off arrogant or cocky, you come off kind of ignorant. Genetics do play the biggest role in how a Flowerhorn will look. But just because you have 2 stunners breeding does NOT mean all the fry will come out looking like them. There will be some that show traits of the other fish used to make that certain Flowerhorn while others look just like the parents. They do change as they grow, a friend of mine has had a few of them. From fry to 7-9"s, they looked so different grown.

As far as aggression, I don't know where you pulled that Red Devils and Midas can always be put in a community tank from. But there are plenty of members here that have them solo because they kill anything and everything in the tank with them. Sure if you have a big enough tank it could possibly be done. But then it depends on the temperament of the fish. Red Devil's, Midas and Flowerhorns are all on the same level as far as aggression goes.

No, not all flowerhorns are determinable of their quality at 1.5-2". So what your saying is that a Kamfa at 1.5" with no pearling and no head, is not going to be better than its brother that is 3" with more pearls and a little kok showing? If so, you should tell me why one of the ugliest fries at 2" became the best fish out of its batch? Or why the one with less pearls, colors, and kok at 2-3" grew out to have the best pearls, head, colors, fins overall against its batch and even took grand champ in ILC show? I know that you know better, please cut the BS answer...
As far Red Devil and Midas, they will shred a flowerhorn anyday bro. Sounds to me like you have very little experience and knowledge about Red Devil and Midas. Try putting a full grown Red Devil/Midas with a full grown 14-16" flowerhorn. That flowerhorn will get shred. Sorry but truth be told bro, flowerhorns are bad@#%!$ but they are not near comparable to aggressive CA cichlid. No offense but, I think your just overrating and exaggerating too much here...
