I say male also. But a very colorful one. The pearl freckles is a giveaway on body and fins but if you look at his face you can also see the blue hue slightly. Maybe washed out from the light colored gravel.

Could very easily be just because it's not wanting to breed atm either so it's just not showing breeding colors yet.
