I have kept marine aquariums for a long time, but will be setting up my first freshwater Cichlid aquarium and would love to get some advice from experienced Cichlid keepers.

The tank is a 110 gallon 48" L x 30" H x 18" W

These are fish that I like...wanted to know which of these will work best together and can live as adults in the 110 gallon tank:

Jack Dempsey - http://www.aquariumdomain.com/viewSpeciesNWCichlid.php?id=29

Jewel Cichlid - http://www.aquariumdomain.com/viewSpeciesNWCichlid.php?id=31

Oscar (any color) - http://www.aquariumdomain.com/viewSpeciesNWCichlid.php?id=31

Green Terror - http://www.aquariumdomain.com/viewSpeciesNWCichlid.php?id=27

Red Terror - http://www.aquariumdomain.com/viewSpeciesNWCichlid.php?id=88

Texas Cichlid - http://www.aquariumdomain.com/viewSpeciesNWCichlid.php?id=86

Also I would like to feed them pellet foods or food sticks....anyone know of any of these species that are hard to get to eat pellet/sitck type foods? Also any advice on sand vs. gravel for substrate? just preference or is one better than the other?

Thanks for any advice on this.

I donno if that 110 gal would be good to keep some of those fish together for life man, those are mean mo fo, I dont think you can mix the above described, at least i dont think it would work for life as I said.

Regardless I might try a Oscar/JD combo or maybe a Texas/Oscar. Oscars are hardy mo fo and perhaps they can hold their ground before a JD or a Texas.

Recently I kept a 6 inches Texas and a 6 inches GT and Texas beat the c***p outta the terror. Texas are mean bulliers, but as i said maybe an oscar can get his ground just try that oscar is at least 1 ich bigger than texas.

By the way, you wont have much of a problem feeding these ones, pellets would be OK and if you can give them some other protein source such as tubifex or even some beefhear when they get bigger it would be nice.

Good luck.

Well if it was me I would skip on the Red terror and Jewel cichlids. The first would b too big as an adult to squeeze into a 110 and the second would be small enough to get eaten I think. The rest would probably work in a 110gal although would maybe be a bit cramped at full grown size. Alot of people here will probably disagree with me and some might say u should only keep one of those in that tank. I personally like a well stocked tank, specially with cichlids, it reduces the agression. Remember these fish produce alot of waste so you will have to have a very good filtration and water changes, or remove another one and stick with 3. I've kept Oscar, Green terror and Texas together before with no major issues. The safest way would be to get them as babies around the same size and have them grow up together. Like with any other cichlids u'll need driftwood and caves so they can set up territories. Let's see, what else do u need to know......... Oscar will grown the fastest and the biggest but it's very mellow compared to others, so it will keep the peace. Getting females means less agression. Oh yea and they will all eat pellets readilly. Sand or gravel it's all the same, they will move it around and rearrange to their liking, no plants cuz they will uproot them.

id say maybe an oscar and green terror. i wouldnt push it and i really enjoy my single cichlid tanks. 1 big fish is much more interactive IMO. i prefer sand as a substrate as it stays much cleaner, and my fish like to play in it (the tilapia in my avatar keeps me up all night with river stones he spits against the glass. i wouldnt use those again) most people feed cichlids pellets or sticks so it shouldnt be tough getting them on that food. just ask what they are eating.

but be careful because green terror will take forever to grow. mine has gone from like 1"-7" in 17months

Regarding substrate if i were you I would only put some very little gravel on it just to give that bottom some view but easy to clean with every WC. Thats how I keep my FH, his tank has just some little gravel that I move and siphon every weekend when I do the WC and that's it, otherwise if you use a lot of gravel you wont be able to keep your water coditions optimal. If youre lazy go with bare bottom.

Thanks for all of the awesome replies guys! For filtration I have a wet/dry filter and a pump that should turn the tank over 6 times per hour. I am leaning towards sand because I like the look of it and want to do the best I can to make the tank look like an actual Amazon habitat. I think I am ruling out the Red Terror and the Texas Cichlid. How about 2 x Oscars, 1 Jack Dempsey, 1 x Pleco and 1 x Red Head Tapajos Geo?

I would substitute the pleco for a large synodontis eupterus (upside down cat)...they are much more awesome :)
