110 gallon Cichlid stocking advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will check it out....are they good at eating leftovers?

Yup & I think they are much more active...and since you thought about using sand as the substrate, it will be perfect because upside down cats love it (they are diggers)

Thanks for all of the awesome replies guys! For filtration I have a wet/dry filter and a pump that should turn the tank over 6 times per hour. I am leaning towards sand because I like the look of it and want to do the best I can to make the tank look like an actual Amazon habitat. I think I am ruling out the Red Terror and the Texas Cichlid. How about 2 x Oscars, 1 Jack Dempsey, 1 x Pleco and 1 x Red Head Tapajos Geo?

If you're going with sand just make sure the filter's intake is far from the substrate otherwise sand would be sucked into your filter and it may carry a lot of maitenance issues.

2 X oscars and 1 JD sounds cool, I'd go with the cuper oscar that's my fave!!.

Not sure is the 6" tapajos could hold his own against a 12" JD, but I never tried keeping those two together.U could try with plenty of hiding spots I guess, also If ur gonna use smaller cichlids I would go for tougher species like convicts or firemouth.
I agree though that Syno. Eupterus is much more active then a pleco.

@Armand

The tank is drilled with an internal overflow that pulls water from the surface and from about 12 inches from the bottom of the tank

@alexanian

Do you think the JD will mess with the Geo? I was hoping that they would not see each other as competition...but I don't have experience with them.

To be honest I never kept the two together, but tapajos are pretty peacefull and do better when in a group while some JD's can be agressive but not all. Female JD would be by definition less agressive. It all depends on the fish personality. You could try it and provide plenty of hiding spots but if the JD starts bullying it, you'll probably never see it cuz it'll be hiding or get stressed out too much. Since You'll be having two Oscars in there which will be taking a big part of ur tank he'll have limited space to swim. Of course we're talking about adult sizes here and u'll have much better chances if you start them off as young and have them grow up together, it's possible that the Geo will become friendly with the Oscars and swim around in their part of the tank. If thats the combo you want then my advice would be get them all small and have them grow up together. I personally wouldn't take a chance with fully adult fish with the tapajos.

Thank you for the feedback. I will be getting all the fish as babies and plan to get them all at once and raise them up together.

Three years ago I stocked my 125 gallon with:
Texas Cichlid
2 Jack demseys
3 green severums
2 frontosas (which are african but i liked the looks of them)
2 green terrors
3 firemouth cichlids

The texas eventually outgrew and ate the firemouths and green terrors but otherwise ive had a really successful setup. The texas is clearly the dominant fish in the tank but his aggression is spread pretty evenly. I really with I had spent the extra few bucks on an electric blue jd and a few gold severums to color the tank up a bit.
Definitely go with the sand. It looks so much better than gravel. Don't neglect on hiding spots either. Each fish should have their own

@fatpacu Thanks for the feedback and pic! How was the aggression level of the green terrors? I am looking for a group that can get along well, so I think that rules out the Red Terror and Texas Cichlid. Thinking maybe I could sneak a Green Terror in if they aren't too bad....I really like their look.

My texas quickly outgrew the terror and eventually ate him. They would probably have worked out better together if I started with a bigger green terror
