Lovely fish!
Yeah, so cool. Makes me think of Dune
Funny you say that, I just watched that movie last night!
Not sure about these two? Rescuers. Cichlids for sure. I like em. They pound on the Jag which makes me happy but other wise cool fish. Sometimes they go after the Dats but typically the Dats don’t even acknowledge they are even in the tank. They are always together.

Black and red one looks like a Vieja, and the striped one looks like a barred Midas.

Ok. If you hang out in the dishes you will get eaten for lunch. My GG loves Scorpions! Yum
She’s a big girl. We call her Peggy Sue. 24” easy. Most of the time angry.

Wtf you just have scorpions hanging around or something? That’s an expensive meal where I’m from. I’m assuming they occur naturally where ever you are?

Stan is epic. Did he tell at you when he was out of water? It’s all fun and games until there is bloody water all over the fish room, then it’s a sport.. lol

I’m in Arizona. I don’t spray chemicals, bug spray, weed killer around my property. Except occasionally I spray for termites. Because of this I have lots of bugs, spiders including black widows, and scorpions. But the benefits are the cool wildlife. I have quail, ducks, thrashers, parrots, all kinds of lizards and ground snakes. I find maybe one scorpion a month in the house so it’s no big deal. They show up in the weirdest places too…

Didn’t know Arizona had parrots.
I’ve heard stories about where scorpions turn up. Weird.

Yeah I think these are love birds, clearly a parrot of some kind? Most likely released from captivity. I’ve seen them every year for the 19 years I’ve lived here so there is a breeding population for sure

Awesome! Great to see another Arizonan keeping a monster tank and the thread alive. I live in Tempe by discount aquarium. Love the datnoids hope mine live that long. Incredible to see and get updates on how long all these fish can actually live. Thanks for sharing!

I did a small modification to my overflows this holiday. If you read this thread you will see I use the overflow space in my tanks as an easy to maintain pre-filter and as a very effective bio tower. Simply put, I fill the overflow space with bio balls and put filter floss on top of that.
My issue was when changing the filter floss the bio balls stuck to the filter floss and I has to spend time picking the bio balls off the filter floss. Typically I’m on a ladder holding a 5 gallon bucket. I just want to put the dirty filter in the bucket and drop the new filter in. 1 minute max, done. One hand is holding the bucket the other is changing the filter.
I decided to put light diffusers as a gap between the filter floss and the bio balls. Previously I used a filter pad to make this gap but that clogged frequently and defeated the purpose of a “pre filter”. Pictures to follow…

This won’t restrict flow at all. After putting the filter floss in I thought it would be nice if the floss could make a cup to keep the water from flowing down the sides. I had some extra PVC and cut this to form a cup
