1100G ~ Finally!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Beautiful tank!! We have had a 370g many years ago that we sold due to moving. We are now thinking about another larger acrylic tank. Similar in size to yours. 120x48x48 bullnose approx . As room divider, But we need to add an addition to our home first :) which I hope happens next year. We are thinking a nice sump under tank or at one end. But we have never used a sump before. I wont be swimming in tank as you do, but am hoping we can use a grabber etc like we used to use with the 370g. Love the tile bottom, what a great idea, though wondering how easy it is to install. we didnt care for rock or sand in ours.

We want it to house large catfish, pacu, arowana and FRT etc, similar to your tank.

Any tips?

I'm not sure you will be able to do all the things you want without having to get in the tank from time to time. Grabbing tongs and long algae scrappers can only take you so far. "Monster-scaping" requires more hand's on approach imo.

As for installing the tile...it is not very difficult if you have a cheap tile saw and are good with a tape measure. I was lucky since the previous owner had tile on the bottom as well--all I had to do was copy and cut based on the old stuff. I like my tile to be even so make sure to lay everything out out before cutting!

Sounds like you have a good plan for a 10x4x4 tank. If I were to change anything in my filtration it would be to use k1 media instead of the mats that it came with.

Good luck and I hope to see a build thread from you soon!

Do you have algae problems?

Do you have algae problems?

Very minimal. The UV sterilizer is a must-have for any large tank. The only place I really get algae growth is on the top where the lights are and the bubbles from the diffusers pop. I did get a little on the glass where the floating plants are and the back tiles, but that was because my timer switch wasnt on and the lights were on 24/7 for a week.

I asked because i was thinking about putting a big tank outside (covered on one side and on top) was thinking algae might be a big problem and not worth it

You will probably get a lot of algae doing that, even with a uv. Plus, if the tank is acrylic, direct sunlight can do some damage to it..so I have heard.

Where is UV installed?
Its plumbed on the output of one of the fx-5 filters.

What size sump are you using?
I'm not exactly certain, they came with the tank and slide in underneath. Pretty sure each one is about 240g, so 480g worth of sump. Someday, I would like to convert sump #1 over from mat media to K1.
