I always over filter witch leads to less filter maininince in the long run. Aqua clear advertises that if you run the filter slower the water will spend more time in the media and that will lead to more bioligical filtration. 1 AC 110 on a 180 gal. tank is not nearly enuogh Just look at the name of the filter that says it all. The reason I picked up a second for my 90 is that my LFS had a 25% off AC filters sale that was about to end who could pass up a 49 dollar 110 not me :D

where are you from? are you in the US? if so then $49 is a lot more than you need to be spending on AC110's. you can get them from www.bigalsonline.com for $35ish and even with shipping you'll still spend less than $49. though apparently in some areas if you print out the big al's ad showing their price then some Petsmarts will price match. you'd just have to try in your area if there's a petsmart around you.

also, I think 2 AC110's on a 90 is about right. I'd run them full blast except at feeding time. I prefer to have 2 110's on my 75 and 4 each on my 125 and 150. once I get moved out again with my tanks all setup how I want though I'll probably switch to wet/drys at least on the 2 larger ones. :)

I must of missed who said 1 AC 110 is ok on a 180 ....

I agree the AC are a great value...I have seen them for under $40....you cant go wrong

The Aqua Clear 110 I believe are rated for 110 gallon tanks (but say they can used with 166 gallon).

Hagen AquaClear 110 Power Filter (formerly AquaClear "500" Power Filter - 110 V)
AquaClear "500" Power Filter - Maximum Output: 500 U.S. Gal. (1892 l) per hour - Full Flow Control: 166 U.S. Gal. (630 l) per hour - Power Consumption: 14 W - Maximum Aquarium Capacity: 150 U.S. Gal. (567 l) - AquaClear is backed by a two year warranty - Flow Control: Simply shift the patented "Flow Adjustment Control" at the the intake siphon. When the "Flow Adjustment Control" is at its greatest blockage, AquaClear's input and exhaust volumes are approximately a third of its maximum capacity.

I guess you can never have too much filtration - I certainly dont fault anybody for that. But its good to know just with one AC 110, you are covered for a 90 gallon tank

i use a AC500/110 on my 75 and the water is crystal clear with a 8.5" JD, a pleco and 13 goldfish, threw out the carbon and am using 2 blocks of foam

Yes i am a filter and water flow fanatic. On my 35 reef tank I had a prizm protein skimmer, Penguin emporer,802 power head ( not sure on brand). I had the power head on a timer to simulate the tide. It was like a typhoon in there but all my corals loved me for it.

The main reason for the massive water flow and filtration in my 90 is that I am using a bare bottom to cut down on maintenance. With this much flow and filtration I am rarely having to vacuum anything out.

As for the BigAls I thought the price difference was so small that the instant gratification of having the filter in my hands made up for it LOL I am very impatient. But before the sale I was going to order it from there :)

Thank you all for your information it never hurts to help ;)
