$12 Flowerhorn

I stumbled upon these flowerhorn for sale at my lfs for $11.99. With a recent upcoming breeding project in mind, whether they turned out nice or not, I thought having some trimac blood in with my mix of fish I plan to breed wouldn’t hurt, so I stared at the tank for about 20 minutes trying to decide on a male and finally chose one I think he is a male now, II wasnture then. This little guy is so personable at only a little over an inch! He’s low grade, but I am guessing Texas/trimac. It’s almost impossible to know for sure but for only having him 12 days, he has changed immensely and is one of my favorite fish already. I plan to cross him with some true wild caught midas/vieja fenestrada crosses I am growing out!

Just for fun, what kind of blood do you guys think he has in him?

I think too early to tell. Looks pretty good and nice improvement. Excited to see how the breeding project would work out. Do post pictures of other fish.

Ruturaj i only have videos right now, which I can’t post on here apparently. I received a shipment of 7 fish. 3 were faded already and 4 weren’t. Sadly, the two largest, fully faded fish did not take the trip well. The other 5 are doing amazing now. Hopefully I’ll see some fading happening soon. They’re still around the same size as the flowerhorn and are grey and drab. Once I see improvement I will post pictures for sure!

Ruturaj the first pic is the largest fish that didn’t make the trip, the second and third is a syn and a bp that seems in the tank with the vieja/midas growouts. I checked and I have no pictures of the others

It would be interesting to see how they change as they grow. I love this thing about cichlids.

He's looking awesome. OP got a steal! Based off the most recent pictures it’s hard to say It isn’t most likely a male.

I’m glad you finally found some success with flowerhorns after all the trouble with the last one. No one could’ve been able to tell based off first pics but I’d say you chose very correctly in that 20 mins.

HybridFinatic thanks! My love for Flowerhorns hasn’t dulled, after my luck with the first one I just needed time to be ready for another. Instead of paying the big money, I bought a cheap one just for fun to see how it turns out. So far I’m surprised how well he is looking, im excited that it is most likely a male. My goal is to breed a decent looking Kamfa from the fish I already have. I want lots of peals and white eyes. With the Midas/fenestrata cross in there, there’s potential for some piebald fry which would be awesome as well. We’ll see how it goes. This is all out of good fun

Nice blue sheen on it! And that bp is one of the nicest ive seen!

DwarfCichlidLvr thanks! I picked that bp specifically for it’s finnage, pearling and body shape. I figured, if it turns out to be a female then I will breed her. Still not sure yet. I’ll update this tread later on today with update pics of it. The picture was taken about 2 weeks ago and he/she was still in the fading process. It still is fading but the oranges are much nicer now
