12 Foot Monster Acrylic Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Got the overflow box custom built by Bud at Turbo's Aquatics. Bud was a ton of help as I went through the process. He's a wealth of knowledge and a great acrylic fabricator.
Bud's so real through with boxing his product.

I built a little scaffle to dry fit the box. It measures about 60"x9.5"x6" tall. I wanted to get as close to a coast to coast as possible to get the most surface skimming. I got just less than half way there. We had to extend the 9" from the back of the wall to clear the euro for access inside the box.

Bud suggested I turn the tank on its back to adhere the box. I was kind of past the point of no return for that though. I had a couple friends help me hold it in place and I used Weld On 4 to make the initial bond to the back wall. I'm sure that would have held just fine but I added 1/4" acrylic rod along the seems and hit it again with the 4. After it set I ran a bead of Weld On 16 over it for extra security.

Here's the final layout of the 3 drain lines. The 45s are for the siphon and open channel. I used a 90 for the emergency hoping I'd never have to really use it. I also only put va les on the 2 lines that will get the majority of the use. The emergency elbow is also upturned so if I need to turn that one off in in trouble anyway.

Did you cut the upper part of the emergency elbow down? I think you want that about 1" or so below the level that would fill up the tank, but with that said, I think it's probably fine with it where you have it shown, but if for some reason you had the siphon and OC clog up and you were running just on the emergency, the water level would probably be above the inside bottom or the euro. Cutting off the upper part of the elbow (the flange for solvent welding to another piece of pipe) would eliminate that risk.

Nice to see a thread for this setup! On the other site, it's spread out across a few threads

Hey Floyd. Yep, that was before I welded it in place. I cut it off with a hack saw then smoothed it out with a wheel on a dremel. Not sure if it gained me that much room but it's a bit better. Knock on wood that pipe will stay dry!

Thanks again for all the advice.

I debated on painting the back of the tank black or just using the cling on type backgrounds. After all the work I didn't want to be committed again to having the back painted and I wasn't thrilled about water trickling down behind the taped on background after Maintainance or splashing. I looked at a bunch of sites and decided to go with the Rocky background from Universal Rocks. I bought two 72" sections which fit perfectly. They also trimmed the top so it would for height wise.
