12 Volt Man's Aqueon 150 Gallon Startup Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
12 Volt man, I was just at the LFS and found them calling the previous fish you kept "diamond sharks". Had to laugh, they ain't sharks lol!

I would really love to keep a few tinfoils, but I think the loaches will just not eat. What are your thoughts on that?

yes, when I bought the first set I had back at my parents they were labeled 'diamond sharks'

bad news update LOL: the new batch of barbs is apparently from the same supplier as the last one - stringy clear/white feces in most of the fish. two fish not eating right (spitting out all food). at least I caught it early this time...

I took a chance and it didn't pay off. you know what happens.

going to the LFS's in the next week or so to get some nice tankmates for my redhooks...

the saga continues..hehe

oh, what a hobby this is :)

but I love it anyway, even when "crap" happens..sometimes things go great, other times they don't.

Nice man, I'm in the works of setting up a 150 gal as well and was trying to see what fish I should put in with some baby stingrays and discus

Dang, this is a long thread.

I have to say, those original tinfoil barbs you had were probably the best looking TFB's I've seen. I have two myself that are well over 12 inches, but they are no where near the brilliant colors that yours were. I also have two red hooks that are around 7 - 7.5 inches long, but again, not as colorful as yours.

So, just a quick question for you. The red tail tinfoils are a different species correct? And they also reach 12 inches in length? How long did you have those guys?

And the filament barbs, they really get to 6 inches long?

Forgive my many questions, but I am a moderator on an oscar forum, and recommending tankmates can be difficult for oscars. Outside of silver dollars, not much grows large enough to live with an oscar without being considered food, but stays small enough to keep in an average (55-75g) sized aquarium.

hi, yes, from what I understand both species of tinfoils that I had (both sick though clearly from the same supplier) are different than the 'red tail' tinfoil barbs commonly seen.

they have distinctive black on the dorsal fins that the redtails lack.

also, based on the redtails I have had in the past, their fin colour is more of a 'blood red' than an 'orange red' that the redtails have.

most websites claim that the redtails don't get big, but I have personally grown them to 12" in the past and have seen them up to 14", so the size difference quoted is wrong.

they both get the same size.

as far as the filaments go, most sources say 6" or so, the largest I have personally seen is 4".

here is an old pic from my tanks when I lived at my parents of my redtail tinfoils in my 65g on the bottom:

these ones were 11 years old when I sold them when I moved..they live forever.

as you can see, I had some big redhooks too. they were as old as the tinfoils. again, another fish that will live forever with just a simple weekly water change..

That sucks, you have worse luck than me and I'm famous for it! Any thoughts on my loach/tinfoil question mate?

I think it will depend on the number of barbs you get.

if you get only 2, you may be okay as far as the barbs not out competing the loaches.

but with more than that they are like a swarm of locusts - everything is gone in seconds..

you can see in my pic that I had loaches in with my barbs in my old tank, it did work for me in that setup.
