i will be setting up a 120 gallon tank sometime this summer and i was wondering what kinds of American cichlids could coexist at least somewhat peacefully in there.

I know very little about New World Cichlids so if i could get some help like numbers of fish i could do of each species, scavengers for the tank etc.

i would like the fish to sorta aggressivish

thanks in advance

Depending upon whether you want 1 large fish or several smaller fish, there are lots of options. One options I've always thought would look cool is a group of convicts. In a 120 gallon you could concievably have 8 con's (especially if you went with all females) and for scavengers you could do a school of 6-8 corie cats. A mix of firemouth's and con's would look good too. Severum's are not typically aggressive but they are stunning, especially the reds.

i was thinking about severums they are good looking

i was thinking maybe 1 big lumbering centerpiece cichlid, a couple medium cichlids, and some littlish cichlids

whats the biggest peaceful cichlid that can go comfortably in a 4'x2'x2'?

If I didn't already have a large oscar, I'd be sorely tempted to go iwth a red severum in my 150 g. With your tank being only 4' long, IMO it limits the type of fish. A severum would be perfect, you could get away with 2 of them if you wanted. For smaller cichlids there are several possibilities that would go well with the sev's (1 or 2). A group of fire mouths or convicts, or a group of keyholes come to mind.

i could really only have 2 sevs in a tank that size?

and yeah i was thinkg some fire mouths
This stock list is a total guess so if some of these get wayy to big please dont "yell" at me

1 Chocolate cichlid
3 severums
5 Fire mouths
4 Convicts
cories and some medium sized plecos

with driftwood, gravel as a substrate and some big rocks

could this even moderately work?

I'd cut that list down to the 1 chocolate, 2 sev's, 4 firemouths and call it good after throwing a few smaller plec's or bn in there.

My stocking list may interest you.

Big guys: Altifrons/Chocolate
Biggish Guys: Severum/Heckelii
Smaller Guys: Araguaia

Plus Plecos.

that sound pretty good.
i really like the looks of the altifrons

what is your overall stocklist like the number and all?

Could i possibly put some kind of Crenicichla in the tank? along with what has already been listed?

2 firemouths
3 convicts
1 severum
and exodons / tiger barbs for dithers.
