I used to have a thing for Severums, it was actually the first cichlid I ever purchased.
The meanest one I ever kept was a gold severum male.
male rotkeil was very peaceful, not sure what they call them here as I kept this when I lived in Europe. but it translates to red neck. I did it a small group of green severums and they were in my 120 for almost a year with extremely slow growth rate...

I have also kept 3 specimens of chocolate cichlids, a close relative of the severum. Two of the three were peaceful, the third one was housed in a 225g with a channa micropeltes giant snakehead and he was the meanest cichlid I have ever seen, he would shred scales off of tinfoil barbs and fight with The snakehead.

so my two cents, they are typically peaceful group of fish but it is entirely possible you could get an ******* dominant male. My advice would be to plan rehoming him if that happens.

good luck! It’s fun to go with a theme, it’s too easy sometimes to get tunnel vision on a theme when ultimately it is your aquarium. You don’t have to be 100% accurate, it’s not a zoo exhibit lol

A Green Severum is the meanest, and most aggressive IMO.
My green Severum is very nice, the only aggression he shows whatsoever is by occasionally chasing a fish away that’s pestering him then he goes back to whatever he’s doing.

Just throwing it out there, perhaps J Joshuakahan you do a catfish community

I’m not trying to be overly location specific, just SA/CA although I may or may not throw in a small syno cat I’ve had for a long time. I’ve never really done a community type tank, I’ve always kept larger predators, rift cichlids or various saltwater set ups. I’m kinda excited to try something new.

Will it stand it's ground if pestered by a BP? I really want a turquoise but I'm not sure about compatibility.
Yes, it will. I have my Severum with two Blood Parrots and when they go to chasing her, she is quick to give them a gentle body blow to let them know she is aggravated, and won't have it. IMo, they're good tankmates for each other.

i always think a large school of cardinal tetras looks sick... couple angels, maybe a couple glass cats are nice as well
