120 Gallon with Chipped Bottom Glass - Should I Be Worried?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I thought about that too xraycer, but I was concerned about aluminum strips being to stiff and not spreading out weight evenly and creating pressure points on the glass. But then again with a layer of silicone between it and the glass anyhow, it might not be an issue at all. I may have to revisit the aluminum idea :) Thanks!

I would worry about the glass chip, and if it were my tank, I would get a 4" square piece of glass, about the same thickness as the bottom and silicone that on the inside corner of the tank where the chip is. If you are using substrate you will not notice it. I would water test it to be sure there are no further cracks in the glass that may radiate from the chipped corner.
I bought a 6' tank at the end of last year. When collecting it I noticed the corner was chipped, very similar to yours, as I moved under the thank, I noticed a crack running about an inch into the bottom pane, cancelled the sale right there.

Well I went ahead and just filled the void with silicone. I took a very close look around the area shining a bright light through the glass and I don't see any runners through the glass, so I'm 99.9% confident that it's structurely sound. Went ahead and used 1/8th inch 1x1 angle aluminum as the base, glued on with a liberal amount of silicone. I'm confident it'll hold well and distribute the weight well. As of right now, it's right side up and full of water for a leak test. So far so good! Nice to see water in the tank after having it moved around inside and out lol

This 150 gal was set up and running 24/7 for over 25 years until a few months ago, when I moved. I got the tank with this chip.

When I moved it was given to a friend, who now has it set up and running again

One step closer. Working on the trim and hood, then buttoning up the plumbing, then filling 'er up! :)

Temporarily lit up with LED strips. Going to need a little more light though. The pictures look like they put out more light than is actually there...

Looks good........and I like the rubber duckies collection! :)

I see that you have a overflow any pics of plumbing? Sump? Canister? I see you're running a canister what looks to be a 40 gallon tank?

Yeah there's a 30 gallon with a cheap canister filter in the same room. I'm going to migrate the contents to the 120 gallon once it's set up, only I don't plan on making it a planted tank

Plumbing isn't finished yet, but I belive is roughly a 20 gallon sump, have a 1000gph pump that I'll use (probably have to regulate the flow with a ball valve on the output), and also going to hide two 400 watt heaters in the sump, and I also have an overkill 300 watt in the 30 gallon lol that I'll probably transfer over if I can find the room in the sump for it. I like redundancy :)
