120G addition Question?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Midas I would not recommend, Oscar taking a chance but possible, Bumble bees are nice Oscars grow big FAST! 120g is fine for one. I have not had much luck with more than one oscar unless there were at least 4. Several others have had this experience as well. I can only speculate as to why. perhaps with a hybrid it would be different.

Good luck

i think the red devil doesn't have much chance to work long term.your other fish are CA,why not try a mellow large growing CA instead of the SA oscar? your footprint for the tank limits your options.clown loaches do get big, they need to be in a bigger group also.you could lose the loaches, add a small catfish or not, then add 2 cichlids,(synspilum,salvini,bocourti,pearsei-many options)possibly some bigger barbs

Thanks guys for all the replys, sorry I haven't got back sooner xmas was crazy. Sorry I didn't explain properley, I would not go with 2 Oscars just a bumble Bee OR Albino Red. Virgil, I liked where you were going with your advice. A big some what peacfull Central American Cichlid would prob fit better than an Oscar. I do have another tank, it is a 180G with an Tiger Oscar 12in, a Chocolate Coryphanoids (from New England Aqurium) 10in, a Green Severum 6in, and 6 Silver Dollars. I really like the Vieja familey, which one would be best. I would like to hang onto the Clown Loaches if possible. I like the idea of getting one more large growing somewhat peacfull cichlid to add to this tank (120g). Arowana is def. out, but I would love one. I want a large Cichlid if not a arowana or Oscar, I would like a big somewhat peacfull cichlid with a big Nuchal Hump. you guys have ant ideas. Thanks Alot sorry I am Pickey!!!

synspilum/melanurus grow a big hump.peaceful will depend on a few things,as you probably know.but generally syns are mellow.i have not keep any other vieja/paratheraps

It's good to be picky! A necessity even.

Always wanted a Midas or Devil myself, but not going to try it. May get one at some point and put him his own tank once he starts to get 'violent'.

Have to agree about the 2 Oscars, even though I don't think you even mentioned getting two. ;) I think an O would be good bet for your tank since your other fish are still relatively small and O's are big cream puffs for the most part. A male GT is a good option for that tank as mentioned. Mine grew real fast in my 150G. He scuffles with my JD sometimes, but it works for the most part. See here http://youtu.be/oZ93D7Tb3fI There is a 11" O in there too with a Firemouth and Salvini ... and krib. ;)

Vieja Argentea are cool fish and good looking. Don't believe they grow the big hump tho. I had a Vieja Regani (wild) and he was a bit skittish. He could hold his own, but was pretty mellow. He tended to bully some smaller fish, but that's typical cichllid behavior.

Off topic: Is Skipton's worth a 40 mile drive in your opinion (I see you are in Boston)? I usually shop at Ned's but he seems to be going heavy toward African Cichlids lately.

I have never been to Skipton's, did hear some good stuff about the place though. I here ya about Ned's, I have had a lot of tanks in the past, a few African tanks and thats where I went for all my fish. He does really cater to the African Cichlids a lot, didn't always use to be like that. If you dont mind paying a little more, Tropical Isle has a good selection of Americans most of the time. They also have 2 big monster tanks with full grown Americans (usually trade ins) that you can find some real nice fish, just depends on what they have at the time. Hope that helps!! Thanks

Hey guys, thanks for the help on my 120g tank. I have thought about it and really want to add a Male Green Terror. My final stocking would be 1 Male Jack Dempsey 4inch, 1 Male Firemouth 3.5inch, 1 Male Convict 4inch, 1 Male Green Terror (as small as I can get), and 3 Clown Loaches 1inch. Do you guys think this stock would work? I would really like to keep my Clown Loaches, I know they are small but the fish I have now don't bother them, and once they get bigger I shouldn't have to worry about them getting eaten correct? I know thats pushing the stocking levels, but like I said its heaviley filtered and I do 80% water changes a week. One more question, is there a good way to sex a very small GT, other than picking the best colored one and the one with the longest fins. Thanks guys, let me know what you think!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the stocking sounds fine and you never will know until you try it. Most of us can just speak from experience and what has happened in the past. Sometimes JD and GT's get along, and then sometimes they will not and fight constantly even in larger tanks. It's good that you have another tank to seperate and mix and match as necessary until you find a happy medium to satisfy both the fish and yourself. Good luck and please post pics once you get it up and running :)

PS. A nice severum would be good to add to the mix also for color (red severum or gold)
