I've been doing africans for a couple years now and want to switch over to larger CA/SA cichlids. I have a 120g but I do not want to do a species only tank. I wanted to have more of a CA/SA community tank.

These are some of the fish I thought might be able to coincide peacefully in a 120
- EBJD
- Paratilapia polleni
- Green Severum
- Cuban Cichlid
- Blue Acara
- Firemouth
- Chocolate Cichlid
- Red Hump Eartheater
- Rainbow Cichlid
- T-Bar Cichlid

I know EBJD's can be quite aggressive, but I figured since they are both smaller and less aggressive than regular JD's, that I might be able to possibly do one in a community tank.. If you guys think its a bad idea, thats ok, because I kind of wanted to work around the Paratilapia polleni.. However I do not want to do a pair.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I should stock in the 120? I figured I'd probably be able to get away with 4 decent sized fish, without overcrowding it..

Ditch the Paratilapia polleni & Cuban Cichlid and you should have a pretty peaceful tank, fish wise. Tank size will be an issue with all of those in a 120g tank full grown (hopefully a 5ft 120, not a 4ft one. If its 4ft, youll definitely need to choose fewer fish), so plan on weeding out the ones that dont workout as they pop up.

EBJDs are rarely what Id call "aggressive". I wouldnt worry about it with the rest on your list. the firemouth, severum and chocolate have more potential to be grumpy than an EBJD.

Do you think I'd be able to do the EBJD, Blue Acara, Green Severum, and Firemouth in the 120 for life?

What are the dimensions of your 120g?

Yeah, unless you had my Firemouth. Im having trouble finding any tankmates he isn't a punk towards. By far the most beligerent fish I own. I just moved him from my 300 because he was giving my Festae hell. Normally you shouldn't have a problem with Firemouths, but every now and again you get one that's an ass. Thats mine.

I'd try it though.

Firemouth can be nasty in an annoying kind of way, they rarely do serious damage but they love to bully smaller fish. Mine (4 of them) would harass any smaller cichlid (specifically my Salvini who where 1" back then) constantly to the point where I just couldn't take it and returned em to the lfs. Make sure the EBJD is bigger than the Firemouth and -if possible- bigger than all the other fish, they can be very susceptible to stress.

+1

My firemouth is a total asshat. He bullies everyone in the tank until the green terror gets pissed off at him and puts him in his place.

hmm I'm having second thoughts about the EBJD and the firemouth now... The only places I can find that sell EBJDs, sells them as 1 inch frys and I am without an appropriate grow out tank, other than a 10g I was going to make into sump

what do you guys think of this combo?

Paratillapia Polleni
Cuban Cichlid
Green Severum
Blue Acara
Salvini
