I dont know anything about wood strength but they look great . I thought they were going to straddle a corner fireplace ?

Simple yes.This all you need for a aquarium stand.These things don't have to be reinforced with 2x4s and 4x4s.And the store bought stands are made real shotty and cheap.Building one your self is going to insure a better built piece of construction,if you have the knowledge and the skill.
