dont use standard aquarium silicone, they make stuff that has MUCH higher tensile strength and more stretch before loosing its seal, its probably just too much pressure for standard silicone to work.

But the design flaw would worry the hell out of me. Imagine coming home to an empty tank and loads of fish jerky? Nope, I wouldn't take the chance.
