The severum with B.A. and congo is starting to look good. I'd like rainbows with that too. That should make for a beautiful tank. Would a black crappie fit in with that mix?

All Vieja/paratheraps/paraneetroplus. When they get big, buy a bigger tank. Regani, Argentea, Fenestratus, Synspilum, Breidohri. Lyonsi are very calm, too, but they're Amphilophus.

Unfortunately a black crappie would need an unheated tank, most cichlids and tropicals need 75-80 for water temp. You could do a native tank only, check that forum section for ideas.maybe try SA theme/biotope with many cichlids to chose from:severum, geos, chocolate, acaras, keyholes

This is what I found on youtube when I went to check if firemouths could go with severums. I like chocolate cichlids so maybe this is the route to go. The tank in the video has the B.A. tetras, a chocolate, and some severums. I believe I saw a rotkeil among the green severums. There were some rainbow cichlids in there too. Rainbowfish aren't South American but neither are Congo tetras.

Too bad the crappie won't go with the tropical fish for temperature reasons. That would be a whole different setup. Not sure that I would want a native tank though.

Clown loaches, too. Gotta get 7 Clowns. Best fish I have.
