125 gal, filtration and setup opinions appreciated

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm hoping not to have too many decorations in my tank, a few pieces of drift wood, maybe a silk plant or two, but that's about it. I just want enough to make my ck feel safe. I do like to over filter. I don't think I'll be using any HOB filters though. I'm not tall enough for that (I'm 5'2" and if I tried to change the filters on an HOB, I'd probably fall in, causing my husband to have to rescue me from a tank:screwy:). I'm looking at the xp4, I see a lot of people have them, and the price is right. What is the name of the fluval heater you're refering to?

I also have to second the sponge filter thing. If I could just not have that big "thing" in my tank it would be great. This is going to be a living room showpiece and I don't think either my mother or husband will be happy with a sponge filter.

aclockworkorange, where did you get the sand for your 125 and what kind is it?? I really dig it. I was going to go with the tahitian moon but yours is nice as well.

Completely off topic, but what does everyone think about the stocking

1x 12inch gold ck
1x 11 inch synodontis
contemplating the following
1 royal pleco
1 red devil (approx 7 inches)
1 greed severum who is about 3 to 4 inches (possibly a turquoise, he has funny coloring)
and the next one is a shot in the dark
a 12 inch jag ( I know this one is a pray to god it doesn't get pissed and kill everything, but I've had him since he was half an inch long.)

I ask about this mix because in purchasing the 125 I agreed to let the other 3 tanks go. Other wise, "rex" (the jag) would have his own tank.

Depending on your house temps you might not need a second one. It cant be fully submerged due to the electonics in it to moniter water movement and such and if things go awry it shuts down.

That said I took mine out when making a shift to the wiring in my tank and quite honestly in a rush forgot to put it back in. I was suprised that my 300 watt rean intake heater kept the tank within 1 degree of there I set it. So I have a 300 watt heater that I paid near $50 for sitting in the cabinet till I set up another tank or decide to go to a sump system.

I will also note that I do run the risk of heater failure running only one heater in the tank. That said my house stays a fair temp and as such even if it failed I would catch any temp changes during a feeding...

I also have the jager heater in my 20 gal breeder which I had used on tanks on and off for years. I would give them a solid vote of confidence like aclockworkorange did. I am a sucker for tech though which drew me into the E series heaters

any experience with the via aqua titanium heaters?

If you read his 125 thread linked in his sig you will see the bag on one of the pages. It is blasting sand which depending on wher eyou live can be hard to find. I am unsure on shipping for it though...

I thought I would remember where that post was but unfortunately I don't have the time to dig for it. I'm sure I can get it locally, I live in South Florida, everything comes here. Was just hoping that I could get the name of it so I didn't have to take the time to search. I guess you can say I'm lazy.:(
