125 gallon grow out growing pains

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If it were my tank, I would add more hardy cichlids like viejas (not black belts) or some Amps. The problem with a light stock is it easy for a less aggresive fish to be singled out. Add more and you solve the problem of aggression but then your bio-load might become a problem. Kind of like which one do you want to put up with?

Temps are 78. Do you think I should or can add more clown loaches?

I don't have any experience with loaches and cichlids, but I would think that would lessen the aggression. The problem with GTs and other highly aggresive species is that once they see fear in another fish, they will continue to escalate. Big water changes can make them go wild too. Maybe start doing 2 30% a week and see what happens. You just got to use the "try and see" method. And sometimes after the pecking order gets in place things calm down.

Try it out for a month or two and see how it goes, my chocolate is not a bully but doesn't get bullied either it holds his own. I have a little sajica that picks on my green terror lol you never know. I waited for my fish to get bigger before adding the green terror so that could be why he doesn't bug anyone

C cichla81 I'd much prefer the bioload. Maintanence doesn't scare me . Vieja's sound good and I'll prob order a trio of jewels to toss in the 40 with the jewel, fry equals food.
Alexxxxsv14 Alexxxxsv14 my white saum seems like he will definitely challenge anything that goes into that tank, so he's under a microscopic lense

I would also see how things settle a bit with the current group. I am really interested in this thread and seeing how everyone does together. I had written off jewel cichlids d/t aggression and I see that was justified. They are so beautiful though. Happy you're keeping them in their own setup.

So many people say that with the saum it depends on the individual fish so I wonder how yours will do with the group.

(Love your polleni! More pics of him/her please. :D )

Good call housing the Jewel with more Jewels. I had mine with Mbuna and Peacocks and it was a fine mix for awhile.

If it were me I would have never tried a GT with that mix. Polleni with Severums and Chocolates is a nice mix. They're all about the same temperament more or less, Polleni are generally much more active than the other two.

With a maintenance routine like you've got I wouldn't worry about bio-load at all. And you're getting a new tank sooner than later. Very nice tank.

kewpiefishypewpie kewpiefishypewpie thank you kindly. The more I read about experiences with the rivulatus, the more I think I did make a mistake by adding him. I want to monitor him, but something tells me he's going to have to be rehomed. I can go buy a 75 to toss him in, but the more I think about it, the more I'd rather dedicate my time to the 125 and 40. If anyone wants a Jeff Rapps rivulatus, I'd basically give it away, as long as it would be going to a good home. What are your thoughts on removing GT and tossing in a less aggressive Vieja, a Thorichthys species, and maybe some other species as well. All feedback is greatly appreciated.
magpie magpie thank you! I will post more polleni photos some time tonight or tomorrow.

A less aggressive Vieja would be about as aggressive as the GT so I don't think this is a good idea. I've attempted Polleni/Severums/Chocolates with Vieja and it was just non-stop chasing and nipping-no good.

Maybe if you can get your paws on some formerly Vieja, Oscura Heterospilus-that would work nicely.

kewpiefishypewpie kewpiefishypewpie Do you know where I can find some Heterospilus? I've read that regani and synspylim are possibilities. Do you have experience with these in particular? Thank you for your input
