125 gallon question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As I said the common recommendation for any parachromis pair is a 6' tank. And that is go be kept by themselves. I know you would like us to suggest another fish because you want a community tank but really you can't have both a community tank and a mating pair with large aggressive cichlids in a tank this size. You need to decide if you want a pair or a community tank. But all I can do is recommend this bit of information. It is your tank, you can do what you want with it.

No I was asking if I could add one more fish with the stock I have now with out doing the breeding pair and do the community set up

So is there anything that would work with your 2 Bichirs, 6" female freddy, 3-5" red islantum, and about 3-5" male cuban in your 125? Correct?

First off, even without much aggression right now, adding another fish might be tricky. However you need to add one now if you are going to add one because if your fish get larger then it will be much harder to add fish.

Without knowing what you are interested in it is hard to recommend something. With our current stock list I would look into other Parachromis as a start. Others to think about could be a grammodes, salvini, Jack Dempsey, or maybe a Vieja species. However really it will come to the individual fish you currently have and the one you would be adding. Those are just some cichlids that ...could work. Let us know your thoughts.

I want something with good color and that would be able to hang with these fish when fully grown because I know they are aggressive cichlids and that's why I like them

Nothing is guaranteed to fit in with your stock , from my experience with similar fish maybe a pike cichlid, they do not seem to draw aggression probably because of their shape , sometimes a less aggressive cichlid that is a little smaller at first works good, a salvini, vieja, ect.

There is a lot of different pike species and it depends in how big , color, attitudes , and how much you want to spend. Most seem to be reasonably priced but some are very expensive. I would advise looking up info online and going to the pike cichlid section of MFK to read up on them. I wish I could give you advise on them but my experience is limited. I currently have a lucius pike, it is 8 " now and is a wonderful fish. It fits in great with my aggressive stock and it is very interactive with me. It is one of the more peaceful pikes but it still holds its own and really never gets picked on or even looked at by the other fish. From what I have read about pike aggression, it is mostly towards other pikes. I hope this helps.

I don't know if I'd call a salvini less aggressive though!
