like it states. i previously had tank setup with course gravel with a clown knife, oscar, texas chichlid, and pleco. for filtration i was running two maxi-jet 1200 powerheads, one in each rear corner. the two rear corners were sectioned off to create a triangle basically which ran approx. 4 inches from the front glass to approx 12" in rear with corner creating right angle if that makes sense. the triangle was sectioned into two halves. the rear half had holes on top which water ran through then down through bonded filter. remainder of that section was filled with bio-balls. it then went throught the bottom seperator holes where it was pumped back out the top. i'm sure i lost most of you. anyhow, i'm now planning on running a canister setup. ive heard either eheim 2217 or fluval fx5. which would be best for me? i'm only planning on stocking another clown knife and a bichir. which brings up next question. does sand give any benefit at all? eg. reduce harardous levels. only reason to even use a substrate would be to use artificial plants to create hiding spots. any info is appreciated. i'm from the old undergravel and go world, so any tips help. thanks.

I would run those overflows and a couple of ac110's, or if the overflows get in the way of hob's an xp3.. fx5 is a fine filter but really expensive. same with the eheim .. xp3 is a good filter for about 1/3 of the cost of the fx5($105 on amazon)although you got to buy the bio media seperate,,, the fluval bio max is about $10-12 per box 2-3 boxes should be plenty

oh, ok...I lost that somewhere in translation ..lol.. in that case xp3 and an ac110 if the hob will fit,, that should be plenty... the 2217 and xp3 are about the same for filtering ability ,I believe...... but I THINK the eheim comes with media? It is ,I am sure ,a very good filter. but IMO the xp3 is pretty solid bang for your buck:popcorn:

By far the fx5 is the Cadillac of canisters but figuring in the cost the fluval 406 is a pretty good one, easy to service and prime and as far as hob the aqueon 75 is a pretty reliable choice ive been through quite a few and for my 125 I run an fx5, a pair of 406's, a cascade 1000 and 2 aqueon hob I dont ever have water quality problems..........couple decent options there "that fish place/that pet place" usually has some decent deals online
