update: got a free eheim 2217 my step dad had laying around. so now just need the powerheads, and probly gonna use a couple of hydor 5 sponge filters (power tends to go out here often).

that's a good plan.. you might get powerheads to run those sponge filters , and keep the circulation upedit.. I FORGOT THE maxi-jets ,, just run the sponges on whatever works best for your budget

so 2217 turned out to be a 2017 that has since broken from when it was running in his old tank, so i'm back to square one

also trying to find more info on the putting sponge filter to powerheads. from what i've read everywhere, i'm confused as hell.

I would go with both Hob filters and the canister, HoB better mech filtration, looking for 10x turn over per hour for tank size, Canister better bio filter and look for 5x turn over per hour. I run a combo of both on all my tanks.

think i have the powerhead thing figured out. i finally found some pictures explaining it. i'm a visual more that read learner. lol. also, went ahead and bought two ac110's. i figure run those and two sponge filters connected to the two maxi-jet's should do me good enough for the two fish i plan i having.
