Hi all,

I’ve been lurking for some time reading quite a bit. I’m not new to the hobby, but I’m coming off a 15 year hiatus. In the past I had all kinds of cool freshwater stuff. I now have the means to start keeping fish again and will be starting with a 125 gallon solo predator tank, something NASTY. I’ve been out of the game for a while I was hoping for some cool suggestions. Considerations so far, smaller variety of Wolfe fish, Jag cichlid or possibly Dovii. Upgrading tanks isn’t a problem but I will need the 125 to last me about 12-18 months. Any other ideas?

Welcome aboard

Welcome to the forum!

Gold wolf is a shoaling wolf (but I’m not sure how well that would go in a 125).
A red is a great solo predator, but it may be a bit small to be a solo fish for a 125 imo.
A black wolf could also work if I’m not mistaken.

There’s plenty of piranhas you can also look at - either the pygocentrus genus or the smaller serrasalmus.

For cichlids, a solo amphilophus would work, but for something more predatory the smaller parachromis (motaguenese, multifasciatus) would be good. I wouldn’t do a jag or dovii, they just get a bit too big to comfortably house there.

A fahaka puffer is also an option, but may get a bit too big long term.

Thanks for your reply, all the gold and red wolfs I have found pics or info on have been juvenile, Interesting no one seems to post their mature ones. The black wolf is very cool. As I mentioned I have the ability to upgrade tanks in about a year or so when my work location changes . I have a 200 gallon in storage already. So I could widen my parameters of fish to chose from as long as they could be happy in the 125 for that length of time.
