I'm going to hopefully be upgrading my 55 gallon to a 125 or 150 gallon in the near future. I would like to stock it with the following fish, but need some help determining how many of each can be stocked in a tank of this size or what a good mix would be.

EBJD
Severum
Geophagus altifrons
Dithers (such as silver dollars, etc.)

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I would do a group of the geos, with a single jack and sev. You could probably do 2 of the sev or jack but that's what I'd do anyway. Not sure about dithers...with that group you probably wouldn't necessarily need them, so just add something you like. If you go with silver dollars I'd get at least 6...if you decide on just largeish deep-bodied tetras or something, or rainbows, I'd go with 15-20.

^that sound fine. i have my EBJD with a severum and a geo.

I guess if it were me, and keep in mind I'm a bit OCD, I would do 1 EBJD, 2 sevs, 4 or 5 smaller geos, and maybe about 5 silver dollars or giant danios. Just my thoughts. Good luck.

I like that idea.

1 EBJD
2 Sevs (super red and rotkeil)
5 Geo orange head tapajos
6 Silver dollars

Would this be OK or is it overstocked for a 125 gallon tank?

It's about the limit for you, but I would be worried about the Dempsey being aggressive to the others in the future, especially if the geos starting pairing..

What all do you have in the 55 now?

That's almost what I have now...well, I've got the JD and sevs anyway, growing out some jurupari to go in there too. The sevs chase each other a bit but no issues at all with the jack (a female). I hear stories all the time about jacks that are either aggressive or skittish, mine have never been either.

EBJD - Not much experience with these, hopefully you have a docile one
Severum - If you get a proven pair, be ready to see the rest of the fish in 1/3 of the tank
Geophagus altifrons - These are a great mix with Sevs, Keep at least 5 of them if you can
Dithers (such as silver dollars, etc.) - I would look at a school of tetras more than silver dollars. The school will keep shape with big fish like you propose above. They may get picked off here and there, but you can replace as needed. I would look at something like Red Eye Tetra, Lemon Tetra, or something else with some body.

The only issue I see is that this tank does not have a super large foot print if you go with the 120. Get the 150 for height! Once your sevs have size and the geos have size, not to mention the ebjd, you are going to have issues with territories, my Geos and Sevs occupy different strata so the 150 would take care of this for the most part. The EBJD would Eek out a space. Out of the list I would make a tank like these
120 Gallon
3 Sevs, 5 Geos, School of Tetras
or
EBJD, 2-3 Sevs, School of Tetras
or
Nice big Sev or the EBJD, Geos, School of Tetras
150 I would try for exactly your list

Just my $0.02

Thanks for all of the responses so far.

My 55 is currently stocked with the following:

2 Sevs (1 super red and 1 turquoise)
1 albino bristlenose pleco
4 giant danios

So pretty much what I'm gathering is that if I want to include the stock list I mentioned above (2 sevs, 1 EBJD, 5-6 geo altifrons, and a school of tetras or SD's), I would need to go with the 150 gallon, right? How many of the schooling fish could go in the tank?

I think you could do it in the 125, but if the taller 150 is an option it would be much better, especially since you're doing dedicated bottom dwellers in the geos. In the taller tank you're more likely to have everybody coexisting and staying out of each other's way.

Are you sticking with the giant danios? I know they're not SA/CA like your other planned stock, but if you go with the 150 a big group of GD's schooling in the top 1/3 of your tank will look awesome.
