Before I start I know the mixing of CA and Africans is looked down on but I am giving it a shot knowing things could change quickly although they have been fine for the first few months. I recently got a 125 gallon 6ft tank to go along with my standard 55 gallon. I have in the 125 at the moment the following -
1 Jack Dempsey - about 5 inches male
1 Green Terror - about 3.5 inches think female
1 Bumble Bee - 4 inches male
1 Blue Zebra - 4 inches male
1 Electric Blue - 4 inch male
1 Auratus - 3 inch male in with these because he is too mean to stay in 55 with smaller fish

What else could I add to the tank. I was considering possibly adding an oscar.

I have in my 55 gallon- these are my smallest fish with most being around 2 inches although the two zebras are bigger than that
1 convict - might eventually move 125 but is really small
1 yellow lab
1 red zebra - think male
1 albino zebra
1 jewel
1 peacock
2 pictus cats

I had these all in a heavily rocked 55 gallon since december knowing was going to get the 125. I have separated them as mentioned above and removed about half of the rock work from the 55 since should not need quite as many hiding places since stocking is down in it. I will be adding more rockwork etc to the 125 as I go.

thanks for any input.

After keeping mbuna for years prior to making the jump to CA/SA I can't even make a halfway reasonable attempt at helping you with your stock.

Some of your mbuna are highly aggressive, the only type that I would even deem as acceptable to mix with CA/SA cichlids is the yellow lab. I personally wouldn't do this, but if I was looking at an CA/SA/African tank I could see them as working.

No oscar... he would be killed by either the green terror, the dempsey or stressed to death by the africans. Oscars look though because of their size and appetite but in reality they're on the lower scale of aggression compared to your stock list.

I had a 7" jack dempsey that killed 4 bumble bees and 6 yellow labs in less than 2 days so I guess you're lucky for making it work. He didn't eat them, he just ripped them apart.

If I was you I'd move all the africans to the 55 and add the convict/pictus cats to the 125, and then get a colorful, though cichlid like a salvini or maybe a vieja to go in there as well.

Isn't it common to keep africans overstocked to spread the aggression?

It is, but certain species. In a 55g you want to mix a max of 4 different species (3 is usually the best I have found) and get them in numbers, 3-4 fish per species...a good ratio is always best of 1 male to several females.

The mbuna he currently has are some of the more aggressive kind and would need something larger then a 55g footprint provides.

Oddly enough the only fish seems to have issues is my green terror..... my jack runs the big tank but by run he just goes where he pleases. The auratus is mean and might have to go. The bumble bee is growing like crazy ...was going to leave him in the 55 but he is outgrowing the others that were his size 5 months ago. I know things could change at any time.

I don't think you will have too many problems at this size, so you can keep all of em if u wish.. but remember the GT and JD will eventually reach over 10"... I had no idea of just how big Green terrors truly get until recently when I saw an 11" male at the LFS... that **** looked like it could easily snap one of your fingers if it wanted to lol
