Tank looks great! Have you considered a non cichlid companion? Since you want a fish to use the over hangs and some of the the cover what about at species of knife fish (like BGK) or a type of eel? Just a thought...

Well setting up another tank isn't an option...someday though :D

Thanks abarilot. Haven't really considering a non-cichlid but I'm open to suggestions. Though, a BGK gets bigger than I want. I think a fire eel would be cool, but I'm not sure if they are aggressive enough of eaters to compete w/ the silver dollars. Also not sure if an eel would get along with my plecos (or vice versa), same goes with a bichir. Years ago I had a 17" ornate bichir (raised since 3") that eventually got ill and died, not long after one of my plecos formed a habbit of sucking on its slimecoat. So, don't want a repeat of that.

cool setup weedamese.

I would put in 4 geophagus Altrifons. They can get to 10 inches but you do have a 125. These are my favorite geos colorwise and a little bit of attitude. They should be fine with the dollars. I Kept 4 of these goes (adult) with 2 redhook silver dollars for 3 years in a 70 with no promblems whatsoever.

I like the idea of taking out the common silver dollars, and doing a large shoal of corys, and adding a couple other neat plecos would be cool. I have a really nice community tank setup with a variety of plecos, corys, angels, and a few other odds and ends and it looks awesome.

Anymore suggestions?

Oh yeah the substrate is a fine gravel, another reason I don't think a freshwater eel would be a great fit.

You could do an eel but they get big, the black ghost probably makes more sense. And yes, skip bichirs when you have plecos...not all plecos suck on bichirs, but there's always a chance they will.

I like the geo idea but I agree with others that you're pushing it on stock if you add a group along with your existing SD/RH school. Something that would work singly might be better, like a severum or chocolate cichlid, something big but peaceful. I'd worry about a GT as I've heard a lot of folks say the GT/JD combination isn't always successful.

Fish that I think would work or that I have seen with SD's are severums, green terrors, oscars, salvini, texas, snook, and regular jack dempseys in with Silver dollars. One I idea I had for my 125 whenever I restock it was to put in about 5 silver dollars, a couple salvini, 1 texas and 1 midas and just let them grow. I personally would keep the red hooks too and get rid of the common sd's and then go from there once you figure out what you want.

Ok guys thanks for the input, lots of good ideas.

Part of me wants to get an eel, but if I got an eel, the species I'd want is a fire eel. But as far as I know, they can get up to 3+ feet? That doesn't sound so good in my 18" wide tank. A Peacock Eel would fit better (max size 8-12" I think), but I'm not too fond of their color/patterning. Can eels thrive in tanks where they are longer than the tank is wide? I imagine they can tolerature it more than, say, a Pacu that can't turn around.

The 2 reservations I have about getting an eel (besides what I just mentioned...) are that (1) I have a fine gravel and I'm not sure if an eel would be able to dig in it and (2) they are originally from Asia right? Right now my current stock are all from SA (unless JD is CA?) and I kind of prefer to keep it that way, but thats not set in stone.

I'm really not wanting to remove any stock, I don't think the silver dollar school would look as cool when cut down to 5 from 11.

The cory school is an option but I've never kept them before and honestly they never really struck an interest in me, but who knows, I might change my mind after some research.

I also like the idea of a single medium to large but peaceful cichlid (what are some more suggestions other than Chocolate cichlid?) or severum. I'll have to start researching severums and see if its something I'd like.

Thanks again for the input, I have some thinking to do :D

I think there may be a possibility of your plecos sucking the slimecoat off an eel as much as a poly. You already know Altifrons have my vote:D
