Keeping in mind it's a lot easier to find a used 180 than it is to find a 225 wide. I've yet to see a 225 wide for sale in my area but I see 180's all the time. For the people saying wider the better, a 225 wouldn't be sufficient for Rays any way, so what would be the point? He already said that he's a bit overstocked, so the depth of the tank is not the issue, it's the gallons. A 180 is perfectly fine, if not more than acceptable for cichlids that grow between 8-12".

I haven't seen a 225 wide either which is what got me thinking of settling for the 180, I've seen these in good condition for $500 and since I can carry over all my equipment from the 125 even a brand new is reasonable with a diy stand.

The point is it is still wider. I had a 220 which was a 72x24 footprint. And I liked it a lot. Now I have a 225 wide and the extra 12" width over a 125 or 6" over a 180 is a huge difference. I LOVE my new tank...that being said a 180 is still a great sized tank and still a big upgrade over a 125.
