125 wetdry/plumming help?

Dr. Joe
I'm using a 1" overflow straight through to the top of my driptray...
With 3 ft of head an anti siphon and ball valve (1" dia. ea) with 36" of 1" flexhose, I find myself having to throtle back my return line with my QuietOne 4000. Might it be a better and less expensive alternative to plumb his return with 3/4"?
I wish I did now.

Interesting...

Do you have to much return flow or not enough overflow (input) ?

oogie is using a 1.5" overflow so he shouldn't run out of water.

I was just suggesting the 4000 to compare better with the mag 92 actually.

if your worried about the waste.. i guess you can use a tower instead of just 2 or 3 trays/boxes. and use alot of prefilter padding to catch the detritus (or filter socks but you have to buy like.. 3 to change and wash them out) and try to use cheap bio media..

lava rock
scrubbies
bioballs <-- used :/

its best you calculate the input flow.. (have no idea how) and that way you can buy the correct pump

cuz you can run 2 inch plumping.. but the amount of water ushually stays the same because the pump can only return so much more or less...

I figured 800gph on the output (1" dia. at 2' of head) for almost 6x turnover (150g tank).

Might just have to tweek it some more...

i think iam going to go with the quiet one 4000(if its to mutch i can always use a ball valv)sence its about 4'- of head from the sump to the tank, the water will enter from the top center in the wetdry, in keeping 1/3 of the media wet should i just lower the drawer into the water afew inches, cut the bottom out and put in a peice of egg crate?

Lowering the drawer should work ok, just keep it off the bottom and inch or two.

do yourself a favor and stay away from pvc and use flexible tubing. much easier to work with and no glue

Flexible tubing doesn't lend itself to routing neatly, or right angles...but if that doesn't matter and you support it where needed it will work fine.

Oh, and use ALL stainless steel clamps.

well i used black PVC glued togeather with oatley ABS glue from the overflow to the wetdry(i think iam going to use flexibel tubing for the return line)instead of lowering the bottom drawer into the water i cut a hole into it afew inches up from the bottom for the water to run out into the sump to keep the bottom media wet and leave room under the wetdry for heaters, iam also haveing decideing how to cycle this tank i havent gotten the heaters yet and i dont whant to use any of my fish to cycle it, someone said to go and buy a live trout to cycle sence i dont have a heater:ROFL: (iam tempted:D )how long would it take to cycle at room temp?(i can take some filter media from my other tanks to help) and i was going to use a quietone 4000 but someone near me has a rio 2500+ for $40 would that give a good enough turnover rate?

add 15 bucks and get a brand new QuietOne 4000.
Get a heater in there and get the bacteria that will do the job, going in the filters...benificial bacteria thrives at 82f and up...
Slowdown bro, do it right the first time...cheaper and healthier in the long run... ;)

i got the quiet one 4000 the otherday(cost 100 bux:irked: )and tomorow iam going to put in the return line to the tank and probably start her up:D and see what happens, iam still not sure how iam going to cycle the tank i can take some sponges out of my other tank filters to seed the new wetdry but what would work better cycling with afew large fish or try amonia fishless cycle?ive never done a fishless cycle before anyone know how well it works?and a LPS is haveing a sale on elite submersible heaters all sizes(up to 300 watts) for 18$ are they good working heaters?
