125G oscar and ? tank set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So im seting up my 125G again i did have 2 oscars in it for a year then hade a go with doing a reef for 1/2 a year thay suck compeared to big fish so im reseting up the tank for big fish
Tank setup will be 1 X fx5 , 1 X eheim 2229 wetdry canster the suction for these will be in a sepret overflow box on the back i made for the reef setup
2-3 big bits of wood might try sand this time for substrate
last time i hade 4 oscars at the start worked it down to 2 through agresion but the 2 still hade rumbles and would get messed up looking and i dident like that
so im thinking this time to try 2 oscars again starting with 4-5 or 1 oscar and somthing else but if i went with 1 oscar and somthing else what do u think my stocking could be was thinking
maby a Ornate Bichir or the standed jd , gt , big pleco combo i do like the look fo fish just crusing around all day where the bichir might just hide not to keen on that so what do people think
this was the old setup will use the same wood http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...-first-pick-of-my-oscar&p=5432697#post5432697

Scratch the pleco. Unless its a bristlenose, its only going to be there for show. Plecos are notorious for getting lazy once they reach large sizes and/or realize they don't have to work for their food since they get scraps or algae wafers off the bottom. Bristlenose is about the only pleco that does a decent amount of actual cleaning.

If it were me, I would have 1 Oscar, 1 severum (gold or notatus would be a nice contrast to a black Oscar with most other severums being good contrast to an albino Oscar), a 7-10" active species of catfish (most catfish are nocturnal, so this could be a tricky search) and either 1 green terror or 1 jack Dempsey.

so i have been looking at your options i could be keen on a severum not to keen on an overall gold/pale colour in fish tho i think the green severum looks nice a GT could be all good thay have good contrast to oscars and a Chocolate Stripe Catfish looks interesting but could it be a bit small

so stocking
1 oscar
1 green severun
1 green terror
1 Chocolate Stripe Catfish
2 Bristlenose

hows that look

That could work. I wouldn't worry too much about the catfish. Unless it is swimming in the space of the other three, they will likely ignore it entirely. I would take the bristlenose down to 1. The catfish will take care of leftovers off the bottom and unless you have a massive algae bloom, there isn't going to be enough cleaning that 1 can't do by itself.

I literally had the same set up I went with one Oscar and one red tiger motaguese which was a mistake. I'd go with a chocolate cichlid or a nice catfish with the Oscar.

ok so my plan has changed there is a jaguar cichlid what i have been looking at but could not find until now in a local shop so im going for that i think thay are so cool i am happy to have him\her alone in the tank but do u think i could still have a cat of some sort it is a 5 Foot 450L even for a while it is about 80mm-90mm now.

You can probably get away with a large cat in there. Try to get something a little more mellow. Most cats are nocturnal, but some are super active even during the day. Too much movement could agitate the jaguar and when you agitate a jaguar, you don't tend to come out unscathed. You aren't going to be able to have much as far as decorations go because a jag will completely redecorate for you. LOL So don't worry about the cat hiding. There won't be anything large enough to hide in or around. Jags get big (I think 18-20") so a cat that gets at least 12-15" would be a must. And I would highly recommend the cat start out 2-4" larger than the jag (depending on the size of the jag and if the jag could fit in the cat's mouth).

maybe try 3 or 4 Hoplo cat fish they clean the bottom of a tank of any left over food spotless and if you dont feed them for a day they will even clean up the poop from other fish!
i keep them with severums and they use to be with an oscar before that, they grow to 4 -7" but are quite thick and really thick armour i doubt much would bother them unless something could swallow them whole including their pectoral fins which have a very thick bone structure.
Bold little cats as well, there out night and day constantly moving and will try cleaning other fish like severums and oscars if there is no food about.
