125g Pair of Aggressive/Personable Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You should think about Carpintis I had one and he was king of his 55g and was glassbanger to add. All the females in my house loved him his colors were amazing.

right now i have a pair of Green Terrors. and 7 Cl all under 3" and the cichlids don't hurt the CL but when they are all eating the GT will push the CL off whatever they are eating and snatch it up.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions, keep them coming!!

I been doing some research and narrowed down my list a bit, this is what I’m thinking. I am new to CA cichlids so please correct me if I assume things incorrectly.

Jaguar Cichlid - It seems along with Oscars nearly everyone’s owned a Jag. Is this because they are personable or because they are common? In other words, do ppl try a Jag, because they have limited access to a Grammode, Istlanum, Loiselli etc??? If you have owned a Jag, what made you make that choice?

Red Devil/Midas – Not sure if there is a difference between these two in terms of temperament. Think they grown smaller then Jag’s.

Carpintis Escondido –great colours and reputation

Trimac – probably would be first chouice, but v.difficult to find a true Trimac in the UK, many are apparently FH hybrids

Festae – love the look but have heard that they are definitely not glass bangers, and rare in the UK

So, am looking at Jag, Midas/Red Devil or a Texas (maybe another tankmate if I got with Texas?)

Any other possibilities? Which would you go for?

Is it worth buying like 3 of the same type of Cichlid and then when they hit a decent size keep the best looking one?

Thx for the responses re- CL, they are all a decent size, still debating which tank they should go in still.

I bought my jag cause they were mean, got a good size, and they went good with oscars:grinno:.

Second on the festae

Thats a 3rd on the festaes, just because they are so beautiful. But honestly screw all the can't put them in with this or that rules. Be creative, every fish is different with different personality. They will learn from you and you have to learn from them.

The only fish I've ever had or 'met' that came close to the personability of my 6 Oscars is my Flowerhorn. Not sure if you're open to a hybrid or not but their personality is identical to an Oscars but they're mean :-O I've got mine in with a Carpinits only because the Carpinitis is way faster and can get away. He swims upside down, sideways, rams the front of the glass, begs non-stop and watches us constantly.
PS I don't want to hear any hybrid complaints, thanks :-)

The red devils and Midas have a reputation to slaughter without reason (other cichlids). dno about loaches but my own red devil tore my oscar up on many occasions. i eventually got fed up with it. it was all-orange, the big lipped type of red devil. so not midas.

i wouldn't call it a glassbanger either. they are more "tankmate bangers" and leave the glass and feeder fish alone.

Hi All

I need some advice and opinions.:banhim:

I pick up a 5’x22”Dx24”H very soon, I already have a 150g community SA tank. Now looking for an aggressive/personable glassbanging pair in the 125. The tank will have double filtration.

I need advice as to what Cichlids would be suitable. I used to have an Oscar and loved the interaction, but don’t want to go down that road again. Any recommendations?

Also, are there any other fish (not cichlids) that can be kept with an aggressive pair of Cichlids? I have clown loaches in my community tank but would like to relocate them to the 125. Would this be possible with e.g. Jags, Midas, Texas etc?

Thanks.

veija synspilum FTW! 12-14" plus the males get a huge nuchal hump. I would love to have a pair.

so colorful:
