I have just upgraded from a 75g tank to a 125g. I have a FX6 filter that was running on the 75g that was moved to the 125g. My main question is can I do a sump for the major debris removal and then use the fx6 for fine filtering and to return the water back into the tank? The tank is not drilled so would need to do a overflow box of some sort, also seeing it is a RES tank (with a large pleco and Jack Dempsey) I only have it filled to about 65-70%... I was thinking a sump between 20 - 40 gals to be able to keep up with the flow that the fx6 will pull... Any thoughts or ideas? I also thought about putting a second fx4/fx6 inline with my current fx6 and just fill with poly fill as a debris collector to keep the main fx6 from getting all gunked up...

Personally would go with a large sump to make maintenance easier.

A large sump might not be doable and I already have the fx6 just looking at something to be able to act as a prefilter so the fx6 can be left alone longer than a few weeks and work like it should... As the turtle makes a hell of a mess...

What about if you rigged up a prefilter? To replace the intake strainer.

are you talking about the plastic strainer in the tank? I was thinking a pair of socks in the sump to be used as a prefilter, as they should be easy and quick to replace/clean but this in going in a direction that i have not been...

Yeah, the one on the fx. For fish most would just pop a sponge over it, but the turtle could rip that apart so depending on how handy you are could even rig it up with filter socks and pvc as a prefilter for the fx

Socks in the sump would probably be way better though

that is my thoughts... just not sure how fast i would need to change/clean them out... and i hope the overflow box would be able to keep up with the fx6... as i said kinda out of my wheel house on this so getting ideas and input before i start getting parts to build...
