13" jag not eating need help asap

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say the temp is a little high, I like to run aroung 75-76.

Do his tank mates push him around at feeding time?

What does your water test like?

I added a RD to my 265 and it took her a week or so to come out to eat because of the other fish.

i would try adding some garlic to the food..it sometimes help them with there appetite for a stimulant..but you could try earthworms as well.....try doing a water change...is it in an area of the house with hi traffic..

I think the jag might be a bit shy with all those tankmates are the midas and flowerhorn as large as the jag?If so i would say that's the problem he's the new guy in a very aggrasive tank it might take a while before he aserts himself as a tank boss and may never with a midas and flowerhorn to compeat with.I would get that extra tank a.s.a.p if he does decide to mate with the lady jag u could lose all your fish the jags could kill themselves trying to kill the others if they spawn.

i think you guys are right
everyone else in the tank are very pushy at feeding time
the midas is a assh@le but is only 7 inches long he pretty much runs the tank
i think i will move both my jags into the 75 gal tomorrow and see what happens
repair thanks for the advice with the temp will adjust it asap on the 75 so it is ready for this bad boy

when you move him acclimate him to the cooler temp:D

yeah good idea
but i just thought should i move him
seeing how he hasn't ate for 2 weeks should i move everyone else instead
until i get him to eat and back into the game
i don't want to risk it
u know what i mean

by god he finally ate krill
i am pumped

glad to hear he's finally eating. it was more than likely a simple fact of him acting grumpy after being moved into a new tank. the older a fish is, the longer it seems to take for it to get adjusted to a new tank. my male trimac is ~10" and wouldn't eat for around 3 weeks when I moved him to a new tank. the older the fish is the moodier it is.

as for the temp, 80 should be fine in a general sense for CA cichlids, in fact when I find fish not eating I'll raise it up a little higher to around 84 or so. there are a few cichlids that won't handle the higher temps like that (Thorichthys are an excellent example) but most others will be fine. the raised temp will raise their metabolism usually getting them to start eating. once they start eating then you can slowly reduce the temp back to normal.

however, considering the tankmates you have in the 180, I'd actually lower it to say 72-74. as I said before, the higher the temp the higher their metabolism and while this will usually get them to start eating, it will also usually increase aggression. lower temps will lower metabolism and in some instances will also lower aggression. considering the midas and flowerhorn in there I'd keep the tank temp kinda on the low side. anything you can do to reduce aggression will help considering the aggressiveness of most FH's and RD's.

if you move just the male and female jag to a 75 keep a very close eye on them. a mated pair who grew up together from the juvenile stage would probably be ok for a while in a 75, but putting 2 adult cichlids like jags who are brand new to one another could cause trouble territory-wise. if the larger male doesn't take to the female, it wouldn't take long for him to kill her. just keep a very close eye on her and have a backup plan ready. :grinyes:
